Four rounds of stroke play with no cut, a deliberately small, closed field by design rather than one narrowed during the week. The only notable exception in the event's history was 2005, when the final round was shortened to 9 holes for weather.

The story
The AJGA Rolex Tournament of Champions has closed the AJGA season since 1978, when it began at Inverrary Golf Club in Lauderhill, Florida. Across nearly five decades it has moved several times, through Horseshoe Bend Country Club in Georgia, Long Cove Club in South Carolina, and PGA National in Florida, before settling in recent years at TPC San Antonio's Canyons Course, the same venue that hosts the PGA Tour's Valero Texas Open. What has never changed is how a golfer gets into the field. There is no open entry. The field is assembled almost entirely from that year's results: the Rolex Junior All-America teams, the Jerry Cole Sportsmanship Award recipient, the top Rolex Scholastic Junior All-Americans, and the top 20 boys and top 20 girls in the Rolex AJGA Rankings as of mid-October. A junior golfer either earned a place across the preceding season or did not, which makes the Tournament of Champions less a tournament a family chooses to attend and more a season-long goal a golfer either reaches or doesn't. The alumni list reflects that exclusivity. Phil Mickelson won three consecutive titles from 1986 to 1988. David Duval won in 1989. Webb Simpson won in 2001, Akshay Bhatia in 2018. On the AJGA's own history of the event, Inbee Park, Morgan Pressel, Grace Park, and Patty Tavatanakit are cited among past competitors who went on to win LPGA majors. The format, 72 holes of stroke play with no cut, keeps the emphasis on four full rounds rather than survival, fitting for a field this small and this earned.
The venue
The Canyons Course at TPC San Antonio, the tour-caliber venue that also hosts the PGA Tour's Valero Texas Open, has hosted the Rolex Tournament of Champions in each of the event's recent editions. The tournament has moved several times across its history: Inverrary Golf Club (Lauderhill, FL) at its 1978 founding, Horseshoe Bend Country Club (GA) through the 1980s and early '90s, Long Cove Club (SC), and PGA National (FL) from 2017-2021, before settling at TPC San Antonio.
Course setup: TPC San Antonio's Canyons Course is a Greg Norman design built to tournament-golf standards, the same course that hosts the PGA Tour's Valero Texas Open. Expect a genuinely championship-caliber test, firm and fast conditions, and a layout that rewards accurate ball-striking over raw length, consistent with a venue built to host professional golf.
Coach verdict
No convincing required. This field is, by the qualification criteria alone, the concentration of the best junior golfers in the country that year. Every top-tier program already knows the names before the week starts.
Best for: By construction, 15-18. Qualification depends on a national top-20 ranking or Rolex Junior All-America selection, credentials that are realistically earned only by golfers deep into their high school competitive years.

The strategic value of the Rolex Tournament of Champions is almost entirely front-loaded into the season that precedes it, not the week itself. Since the field is set by the Rolex AJGA Rankings as of October 15 and that year's Rolex Junior All-America honors, there is no late push, no strong finish in November, that buys a spot after the fact. Families targeting this event should treat it as a full-season point-accumulation goal across ranked AJGA events, not a single tournament to peak for.
