The story
The Junior World Golf Championships trace back to 1968, founded by John W. Brown, A.S. "Lou" Smith, and Norrie West under the San Diego Junior Golf Association, itself established in 1952. The first edition drew 475 entrants from 20 states and 6 countries, modest by today's standard but already the largest junior field most competitive golf had seen at the time. The tournament's defining claim to fame is a single alumnus: Tiger Woods won six age-division titles at Junior World across 1984, 1985, 1988, 1989, 1990, and 1991, more than any other golfer in the event's history, years before he won anything as a professional. He is far from the only future star to come through San Diego in July. Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els, Jason Day, Nick Price, Corey Pavin, David Toms, and Notah Begay III all played Junior World as boys; Amy Alcott, Lorena Ochoa, Brandie Burton, and Jennifer Rosales did on the girls' side. The event has carried different presenting sponsor names over the decades, from Callaway to IMG Academy to, as of the 2026 edition, USWING MOJING, a detail that changes from year to year and is worth confirming against the tournament's own site before quoting a specific sponsor. What has not changed is the structure: ten divisions spanning ages 6-and-under through 18, spread across multiple San Diego-area courses at once, with the 15-18 boys playing Torrey Pines South, the same course that hosted the 2008 U.S. Open.
The venue

Course setup: Course difficulty varies meaningfully by division since the field is split across several San Diego courses at once. The 15-18 boys' division at Torrey Pines South plays a genuinely championship-caliber, U.S. Open-tested course, while younger divisions play shorter, more forgiving layouts elsewhere in San Diego. This is one of the only events in junior golf where the venue difficulty is deliberately tiered by age.

Ten divisions split by gender across seven age brackets, from 6-and-under through 18. Competitive rounds run across a single week each July, with divisions playing simultaneously on different courses rather than one field on one course.

Coach verdict
Coaches watch the 15-18 divisions, particularly on Torrey Pines South, but the tournament does not publish attendance figures, so treat its recruiting value as real but less quantifiable than an event like the AJGA Rolex Tournament of Champions or a heavily-scouted AJGA invitational.
Best for: Excellent for essentially every age, since it is one of the few national events with a division for players as young as 6-and-under through 18. Families with multiple junior golfers at different ages can compete in the same week at the same location.

Competitive insight
Junior World's value is different from a small, elite invitational. With ten divisions and well over a thousand entrants, it is less about a single marquee finish and more about volume: a young golfer gets a genuine international field, multiple age brackets deep, in a single week. For a golfer early in the competitive path, this is one of the few national-caliber events where the youngest divisions (6-and-under, 7-8, 9-10) get a real tournament experience rather than being an afterthought to an older age group.
Scoring context: Scoring varies widely by course and division given the tiered venue difficulty. The 15-18 boys' division at Torrey Pines South, one of the longer and more demanding courses in junior golf, typically produces the tournament's highest scores relative to par; younger divisions on shorter courses score closer to or under par.

Registration opens by division through the tournament's BlueGolf platform; divisions can fill, so registering early in the year matters. San Diego in July is peak tourist season, book lodging well ahead of the tournament week.
