The story
The Optimist International Junior Golf Championship is one of the most international events in junior golf. Its lineage traces to the San Diego junior golf community of the late 1960s, and Optimist International has sponsored the championship since 1978, running qualifying tournaments across the United States and Canada. In 1995 Optimist International moved the championship to the Doral resort in South Florida and gave it its current name, and it has been a Miami fixture ever since. The defining feature is the age-division structure. Rather than a single field, the Optimist runs separate divisions from age 10 through 18 for both boys and girls, spread across three weeks in July so that families with multiple children can compete and the resort can host the world's juniors in waves. Players earn their place through district qualifying tournaments held across North America and internationally, which is why a Doral field can include competitors from dozens of countries. In 2026 the youngest divisions, Boys 10-11 and 12-13 and Girls 10-12, play July 15 to 20. The middle divisions, Boys 14-15 and Girls 13-14, play July 20 to 25. The championship divisions, Boys 16-18 and Girls 15-18, play July 25 to 30. For younger juniors it is one of the best early introductions to championship-caliber competition and travel, and for the older divisions the final week is a genuine international proving ground.
The venue
The Doral resort in Miami, a longtime home of professional and international junior golf, hosts the Optimist across multiple courses. The resort setting lets the championship run several age divisions across consecutive weeks in July while keeping the international field in one place.
Course setup: The Doral courses play as firm, wind-exposed Florida layouts with grain-heavy Bermuda greens and water in play on many holes. Afternoon sea breezes add a scoring variable, especially for players from cooler climates who are used to softer, bent-grass conditions. Course management and comfort on Bermuda are the keys to scoring here.
Format
The 2026 championship runs across three division weeks in July at Doral. Boys 10-11 and 12-13 and Girls 10-12 play July 15-20. Boys 14-15 and Girls 13-14 play July 20-25. Boys 16-18 and Girls 15-18 play July 25-30. Players qualify through district tournaments held across the United States, Canada, and abroad.

Coach verdict
Coaches focus on the final week's championship divisions, where the international field is strongest. For younger juniors the event is about development and exposure to a big-field championship rather than direct recruiting, which is a healthy way to use it early.
Best for: Genuinely all ages 10-18, because the division structure keeps competition age-appropriate. The developmental value is highest for 10-14 year olds building experience, while the recruiting value lives in the oldest divisions during the final week.

The Optimist works on two levels. For 10-14 year olds it is one of the best places to build early championship experience against a broad field without the pressure of a recruiting spotlight. Match the value to the age. It is developmental for the young divisions and a genuine test for the oldest.
Application tip
Entry is through a district qualifying tournament, so the first step is finding and entering the district qualifier for the player's home region. Qualify early in the season, and if traveling from a cooler climate, build in practice time on Bermuda greens before the championship.
