The story

U.S. Kids Golf says its international program began with the European Championship in 2008. The championship is played in East Lothian, Scotland, and the 2026 edition, May 26-28, was the 17th annual. In 2025, over 500 golfers aged 5-18 and their families came from more than 50 countries to compete. It is built for families. Divisions run by age group, from 9-hole divisions for the youngest players up to 15-18, and each age group is assigned one of the host courses. A Parent/Child event is played before the championship, and afterwards qualifying boys and girls aged 11-14 are selected for the Van Horn Cup, a one-day best-ball event, played in 2026 at North Berwick Golf Club. Entry in 2026 worked in two stages. Players with U.S. Kids Golf Priority Status, Lifetime through Level 4, were invited in tiers in January, and players without it could submit an open application, reviewed from February 6 and then each Friday until general registration closed on May 21. Entries were first come, first served, so an invitation did not guarantee a place. The 2027 dates are June 1-3; courses, fees and invitation dates for 2027 have not been announced.

The venue

The championship is spread across several courses in East Lothian, on the coast east of Edinburgh, with each age group assigned a course. The 2026 courses were Craigielaw (Aberlady), Longniddry, The Musselburgh (Monktonhall, Musselburgh), Glen (East Links, North Berwick) and Royal Musselburgh (Prestonpans). The 2027 courses have not been announced.

Course setup: U.S. Kids Golf assigns each age group a course. In 2026 boys 15-18 played The Musselburgh Golf Club, girls 15-18 played Royal Musselburgh, and the youngest 9-hole divisions used Longniddry. U.S. Kids Golf publishes age-group yardages on its site; check the 2027 assignments once they are posted.

Format

A three-day event: entry includes three tournament rounds, practice range access, tee gifts, a caddie bib and awards. Divisions run by age group, with 9-hole divisions for the youngest (in 2026, boys 8 and under and girls 9 and under) and 18 holes for the rest. The Tournament Age Date sets each player's age group; for 2026 it was May 31.

Coach verdict

This is a family and development championship first. The recruiting-relevant part is the ranking recognition for the older divisions.

Best for: Ages 5-18, and especially the younger age groups, for families who want an international golf trip with a real championship attached. The Tournament Age Date sets the age group (May 31 for 2026).

College scouting: U.S. Kids Golf doesn't publish how many college coaches attend.

Competitive insight

For a young player this is an introduction to championship golf abroad, on unfamiliar courses far from home, with an international field in the same age group. For older players the ranking recognition is what makes the trip count: in 2026 the 15-18 divisions were World Amateur Golf Ranking events, where each organization's requirements were met.

Application tip

Priority Status is the main way in. In 2026 invitations went out in tiers in January to players with Lifetime through Level 4 status, and entries were first come, first served. Without Priority Status, use the open application. Priority Status earned at the 2026 event is active from September 1, 2026 through August 31, 2027. The 2027 invitation schedule is not yet posted.

What makes it different

Ages 5-18, with 9-hole divisions for the youngest
Over 500 players from more than 50 countries in 2025
Each age group assigned its own host course
Played in East Lothian, Scotland
Van Horn Cup best-ball event for qualifying 11-14 year olds after the championship
Parent/Child event before the championship

Is it worth the travel?

situational valueEntry in 2026 was $475 for 9-hole players and $575 for 18-hole players, before flights and lodging in Scotland. For a family that wants a golf trip abroad with a championship attached, it delivers. As a recruiting trip for an older junior on its own, the travel is harder to justify.
