Format
Three rounds over three days, Thursday to Saturday in 2026, with each age group on its assigned course. Boys play in seven age groups, from 6 & Under through 12, and girls in six, from 7 & Under through 12. The organizer runs both 9-hole and 18-hole age groups. First-round pairings are random, second-round pairings follow score, and in the final round the top half of each field tees off first, followed by the rest. The Van Horn Cup, a one-day best-ball match for 16 boys and 12 girls from the 12-year-old age groups, follows on Pinehurst No. 4.

Field
Over 1,600 players (organizer's figure) · By invitation, through U.S. Kids Golf Priority Status
From over 50 countries, per U.S. Kids Golf's tournaments page
Application tip
Entry is by invitation, not open registration. U.S. Kids Golf invites players by Priority Status level on a space-available basis. Once a level is unlocked, registration is first come, first served, and players who register after an age group fills go on a waitlist. Priority Status is earned through U.S. Kids Golf Local Tours and multi-day events, and an event must have a Tournament Age Date of April 15 or earlier to count toward that summer's World Championship. Check the organizer's Registration Information page for the invitation schedule once the 2027 event page is posted.
The story
The U.S. Kids Golf World Championship is the organizer's championship for golfers ages 5 to 12, and U.S. Kids Golf describes it as the world's largest junior golf tournament. U.S. Kids Golf was started in 1996 by Dan Van Horn, and the first World Championship was held in 2000 at Jekyll Island, Georgia. After what the organizer calls a short stint in Williamsburg, Virginia, the championship moved to the Pinehurst area of North Carolina, and U.S. Kids Golf marked its 10-year anniversary there in 2015. The structure is by age. Boys play in seven age groups, from 6 & Under through 12, and girls in six, from 7 & Under through 12, so a nine-year-old plays against nine-year-olds. Each age group has its own course and target yardage: in 2026 the target was 5,700-6,000 yards for Boys 12 on Pinehurst No. 8 and 5,100-5,400 yards for Girls 12 on Pinehurst No. 5, with shorter targets for each younger age group. The week also includes a Parade of Nations through the Village of Pinehurst, Parent/Child events and an awards ceremony after the final round. The organizer's tournaments page describes a field of over 1,600 players from over 50 countries. This page covers the World Championship only. Golfers ages 13 to 18 play the separate U.S. Kids Golf World Teen Championship, also in the Pinehurst area. In 2026 the World Teen Championship was July 23-25 and the World Championship was July 30 to August 1, each followed the next day by its Van Horn Cup. In 2027 the order reverses: the World Championship is July 22-24 with its Cup on July 25, and the World Teen Championship is July 29-31 with its Cup on August 1.
The venue
The championship is played across courses in the Pinehurst area, with each age group assigned its own. In 2026 the assignments were Pinehurst No. 8 (Boys 12), Talamore Golf Club (Boys 11), Legacy Golf Links (Boys 10), Pinehurst No. 1 (Boys 9), Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club (Boys 7 and Boys 8), Longleaf Golf & Family Club (Boys 6 & Under and Girls 7 & Under through Girls 9), Quail Ridge Golf Club (Girls 10), Pinehurst No. 6 (Girls 11) and Pinehurst No. 5 (Girls 12). The Van Horn Cup is played on Pinehurst No. 4. U.S. Kids Golf had not posted 2027 assignments as of October 10, 2026.
Course setup: Each age group plays a course set to a target yardage. The 2026 targets were 5,700-6,000 yards for Boys 12, 5,400-5,700 for Boys 11, 4,900-5,200 for Boys 10 and 4,400-4,700 for Boys 9, and 5,100-5,400 for Girls 12, 4,800-5,100 for Girls 11 and 4,200-4,500 for Girls 10. The younger age groups play shorter courses again. Players and caddies walk during tournament rounds.
Coach verdict
College coaches are not the audience for a championship that ends at age 12. Its value is the experience: three rounds against same-age players from many countries. Ranking recognition applies only at the top of the age range, where U.S. Kids Golf reports the 11 and 12 age groups to Junior Golf Scoreboard and the AJGA's Performance Stars program.
Best for: Ages 5-12 only. Boys play in age groups from 6 & Under through 12 and girls from 7 & Under through 12. A player's age group is fixed by the Tournament Age Date, which was July 31 for the 2026 championship. The 2027 date was not posted as of October 10, 2026. Golfers 13-18 enter the separate World Teen Championship.

Competitive insight
Three rounds against players of the same age is the point of the week. The format gives a young player room to recover from a poor start: every player is in the final round, pairings are redrawn by score after the first round, and awards go to the top five in each age group with coins for places 6 through 20. The organizer notes that a top-20 finish does not by itself qualify a player for the next year's championship, so plan the following season's Priority Status separately.
What makes it different
Is it worth the travel?
situational valueThe 2026 entry fee was $475 for 9-hole players and $575 for 18-hole players, and it did not include practice rounds, which families book with their assigned course. Add travel and several nights of Pinehurst-area lodging in late July. The trip only arises for a player who has earned an invitation, and it is not open to players 13 and older, who have the World Teen Championship instead.
