Golf decisions
Midwest golf trips: choose a resort base or a city-based plan
A Midwest golf trip can be a stay centered on several resort courses or a city visit with a round added. Decide which structure matters before choosing a destination. Wisconsin, northern Michigan and Chicago provide useful comparisons, but their access rules, geography and seasonal operation should remain separate.

Four fictional Midwest choices
Original teaching comparison
Four fictional Midwest choices- Fictional: a Wisconsin walking trip
- Four golfers want several rounds and plan to stay elsewhere.
Sand Valley has a golf-only route, but that does not remove the separate Lido resort-guest restriction.
Case 1 - Fictional: one Michigan clubhouse
- A group wants several course choices while keeping check-in centered on one facility.
Compare Grand Traverse Resort’s Bear, Wolverine and Spruce Run, which share a central clubhouse.
Case 2 - Fictional: a Thompsonville stay
- A traveler books near Traverse City and assumes Crystal Mountain is the same base.
Crystal Mountain is in Thompsonville. Evaluate the actual route rather than treating the destination names as interchangeable.
Case 3 - Fictional: a Chicago city break
- Friends want restaurants and city activities with one round.
Start with city public golf or Harborside, then expand to Lemont only if the travel fits the visit.
Case 4
Fictional destination comparisons; no travel times, lodging availability, golf inventory or independent course rankings were established.
The short version
- Choose the base first: a golf-centered resort stay or a city-based visit.
- Check walking and guest-status restrictions before counting courses in the itinerary.
- Treat a published golf route as an option to investigate, not a complete available trip.
Wisconsin: make walking and access explicit
Sand Valley lists Sand Valley, Mammoth Dunes, Sedge Valley, Sandbox, Commons and The Lido, alongside a golf-only reservation route. The rate page describes walking-only golf. Its medical-cart process is a separate request route, so a traveler who needs assistance should clarify the actual arrangements before building an itinerary.
The Lido has its own limited access: Sand Valley resort guests, Sunday through Thursday, subject to availability. An off-property stay and a general golf-only link do not create that access. Count confirmed rounds separately from courses you merely hope to request, and read cancellation conditions for the specific lodging or golf product.
Northern Michigan: choose the actual resort base
Grand Traverse Resort in Acme offers The Bear, The Wolverine and Spruce Run from a centralized clubhouse. The operator distinguishes resort guests, outside guests and replay products. That makes it a useful multi-course-base candidate, but a course list alone does not demonstrate a three-round reservation or a specific replay discount.
Crystal Mountain in Thompsonville offers Mountain Ridge and Betsie Valley. Its public and houseguest portals are separate, with houseguest savings described as up to ten percent. Compare the actual room and golf combination for your dates rather than treating the maximum advertised discount as a fixed benefit.
Chicago: add golf to a broader visit
Chicago’s public choices include Park District facilities and Harborside; Cog Hill provides four championship courses at Lemont. Harborside explicitly allows walking and riding, with public bookings up to twenty-one days ahead. That contrasts with a walking-centered resort itinerary and may change the equipment and mobility plan.
Score each destination against the trip’s actual constraints: nights away, desired round count, walking needs, lodging status and non-golf priorities. Verify seasonal operation and the route from the accommodation before comparing total cost. Detailed course booking belongs in the destination’s own guide; this decision is about which type of Midwest base fits the trip.
