British Girls Amateur and U16: compare the entry decisions
The R&A Girls' Amateur and Girls' U16 are different championship entry decisions. Their 2026 terms used different age and performance screens and different selection methods. A player who could apply to both still needed to follow each event's separate application and field process.

Four fictional comparison cards
Original teaching comparison
Four fictional comparison cards- Fictional: the younger applicant
- Ava appears to meet both events' 2026 birth-year and performance screens.
She checks both sets of terms and notices; eligibility for one does not constitute an application or accepted place in the other.
Case 1 - Fictional: a WAGR route
- Bea meets the Amateur's WAGR screen under the applicable player requirements.
She distinguishes that entry alternative from the U16 event's handicap-based process.
Case 2 - Fictional: near the U16 limit
- Cara's Index permits an application under the U16 maximum.
She does not treat the maximum as the eventual field cutoff, which depends on the competing entry list.
Case 3 - Fictional: tied for the final U16 place
- Dani's hypothetical handicap ties at the last place in field selection.
She checks the published ballot procedure instead of assuming every tied applicant is automatically accepted.
Case 4
These are invented 2026 cases, not eligibility decisions or actual ballots. Amateur status, club membership and the full published player-eligibility policy remain required.
The short version
- The Amateur used WAGR or handicap alternatives; U16 used its own handicap screen.
- Birth-year and field-size conditions differed.
- The closed 2026 terms do not establish 2027 availability.
Put the two entry screens side by side
The 2026 Girls' Amateur required birth in 2008 or later. Its performance alternatives were women's WAGR positions 1–1000 or a women-rated Handicap Index no higher than 2.4 at entry. The U16 terms required birth in 2010 or later and an Index no higher than 5.4, alongside the other published requirements.
Record the actual evidence for the relevant event rather than describing the player simply as an elite junior. A ranking entry route and a handicap entry route use different records. Keep membership, amateur status and player-policy questions separate from the performance number so that satisfying one condition is not mistaken for satisfying the entire application.
Compare selection, not just the threshold
The Amateur's 144-player selection used specified exemptions, then the stated WAGR snapshot and handicap ordering. Its reserve process was separate from the ability to submit an entry. A good application file therefore preserves the evidence and the eventual selection notice, not just a screenshot of the entry limit.
The U16 field was 78 players selected by lowest Index, with a ballot for a tie at the final place. That procedure means an applicant within 5.4 could still miss the field. The useful question after eligibility is how the actual application ranked under the organizer's selection process.
Plan around the actual edition
Both inspected championships are past 2026 events. Their application closes, event dates and field outcomes must not be presented as an open invitation now. A later edition can change its conditions, so an age calculation or threshold should not be rolled forward without the new terms.
Prepare a short checklist for each event: edition, birth-year rule, performance evidence, application close, permitted updates and acceptance status. Keep accepted and reserve messages distinct, and follow the organizer's instructions if a place is offered. This comparison helps organize the decision without promising a championship place or certifying an individual player's eligibility.
