Old or Sharpened Wedge Grooves: Tournament Legality

A club’s model history, current condition and the event’s Local Rule are three separate checks. Groove sharpening can change the actual club beyond its original model record.

  1. Event notice

Ava checks whether G-2 is adopted.

The elite-condition question differs from general conformity.

  2. Original model

The information database describes the model’s relevant status.

    Match exact model and specification.

  3. Actual condition

Ben’s wedge has been regrooved or otherwise altered.

The original model listing cannot certify that alteration.

  4. Uncertainty before play

Cara cannot establish the applicable status.

Ask the Committee or equipment authority before relying on it.

The short version

  • Check whether the event adopts Model Local Rule G-2.
  • A model database is not a certificate for every modified example.
  • Do not assume all older clubs became universally illegal in 2024.

Keep the historical date in context

The R&A’s January 2024 update states that the 2010 groove specifications continue to apply through Model Local Rule G-2 rather than automatically becoming a universal condition for every golfer. It also describes how a future full implementation would be communicated.

That statement does not mean every old club is conforming. Other equipment requirements and the actual club’s condition still apply. Check the current official guidance and the event’s exact notice.

A sharpened club is an actual-equipment question

A tool can alter groove dimensions or edges. A model’s status when manufactured does not establish the conformity of a modified individual club. Do not promise that a small amount of work is always safe because it is hard to see.

Use the equipment authority’s procedures where a physical assessment is needed. A photograph or seller assurance cannot replace the relevant conformity determination.

Resolve the question before the round

Record model, markings and known alterations, then ask which event rule applies. Avoid using a questionable club simply because another event allowed a similar one.

For damage during the round, use broken-club rules. For finish-preserving maintenance, use club cleaning and storage.
