Match-Play Brackets: Byes, Seeds and the Draw

Byes fill a bracket structure when the field is smaller than its next complete size. Who receives them depends on the event’s declared draw method.

TURN 1

Four byes

Fictional seeded method awards byes to seeds 1–4.

This is a stipulated example, not a universal allocation rule.

TURN 2

Four played matches

5 v 12,6 v 11,7 v 10,8 v 9.

Eight players produce four winners.

TURN 3

Next round

Four bye recipients plus four match winners.

Eight players remain for the quarterfinal stage.

TURN 4

Different draw method

A random-draw event can allocate places differently.

Publish that method before producing the draw.

Fictional cases and stated event assumptions. The exact official rule, eligible player category and actual Committee notice determine the real procedure.

The short version

  • A12-player field needs four byes in a 16-slot bracket.
  • Seeding and random drawing are different event choices.
  • A bye is not the same as a late withdrawal or walkover.

Balance places and people

The fictional field has 12 entrants. A16-slot bracket has four empty places, producing four byes. The other eight entrants play four matches; their winners join the four bye recipients. That arithmetic creates eight quarterfinalists.

The illustrated first-round pairings are one stated seeded method. Place the resulting matches into a full published bracket so players can see later opponents and the separation of seeds. Do not choose the next pairing after seeing who won.

State how the seeds are determined

Qualifying scores, rankings and random draws are different methods. Publish the relevant tie-breaking and eligibility provisions before deciding who occupies a seeded position. A seed does not guarantee advancement in a played match.

The Committee Procedures discuss organizing the draw and competition terms. Use those principles with the event’s actual policy rather than claiming every golf bracket gives the top four a bye.

Keep withdrawals distinct from original byes

A player leaving after the draw creates a withdrawal or other event-management question. It does not retrospectively prove that the initial bye allocation was wrong. State replacement, reserve and reporting procedures in the terms.

For a qualifying-score tie, use the declared tie-break. For a match dispute, use ruling-request deadlines.
