Wrong Place in Golf: Serious Breach and Correction

A wrong-place stroke does not always call for the same correction. In stroke play, the seriousness of the advantage determines whether the hole must be corrected.

  1. 1

    Wrong place identified

Ava played outside the permitted location.

Record the full facts and applicable rule.

  2. 2

    Significant advantage?

A shortcut around a major obstacle differs from a small location error.

The Committee decides seriousness from all relevant factors.

  3. 3

    Correct in time

A serious breach requires a right-place ball and timely correction.

Do not start the next hole or return the final card first.

  4. 4

    Report two-ball procedure

Ben used both balls because seriousness was uncertain.

He must report even if the scores match.

The short version

  • The general penalty applies to playing from a wrong place.
  • A serious breach in stroke play requires correction.
  • If two balls are used over uncertainty, report the facts before returning the card.

Treat “wrong place” as the starting diagnosis

First identify the procedure that fixed the required place: replacement on a spot, a relief area or another rule. A favorable lie alone does not establish which rule was breached. Preserve the original and played positions, distances and obstacles.

The serious-breach question concerns a significant advantage. Distance, difficulty, obstacles and conditions all matter. A page illustration cannot determine an actual ruling from distance alone.

Use the stroke-play correction branch

When there is no serious breach, the player continues with the wrong-place ball and the general penalty rather than inventing a correction stroke. When there is a serious breach, the player must complete the hole correctly within the deadline.

If uncertain, the applicable two-ball procedure protects the question for the Committee. Keep separate scores and describe which ball was played from which location. That is not a permission to choose the better final number.

Reporting is part of the procedure

A player using a second ball because seriousness is uncertain must report the facts before returning the card, even if both scores match or the player later decides not to finish both. Skipping the report can itself result in disqualification.

The match-play general penalty and ruling-request procedure are different. For a ball that rolled away during relief, start with drop, re-drop or place before making a stroke.
