GSGA Junior Tour Divisions: Age, Score and Yardage
A junior’s average means little without the distance and course setup behind it. GSGA asks families to compare age, ability and the listed yardage range together.
Tournaments & Events · Updated October 23, 2026
Two averages of 85 can describe different records
Original yardage comparison
Two averages of 85 can describe different recordsBoys 15–18 Intermediate: 18 holes, 5,700–6,300 yards, average 80–110. Advanced: 18 holes, 6,200–6,800 yards, average 85 or below.
These are the organizer’s 2026 guidelines for this row, not universal thresholds.
CASE 01
Record A · 85 at 5,800 yards
A fictional boy is 16 on July 22, 2026 and has a sustained eighteen-hole average of 85 at this length.
The distance fits Intermediate. These inputs do not establish an Advanced record at 6,200–6,800 yards.
CASE 02
Record B · 85 at 6,400 yards
Another fictional boy of the same age averages 85 over eighteen holes at this length.
Both distance and score match the Advanced guideline. That supports a placement discussion, not automatic promotion.
CASE 03
The nine-hole trap
A separate 13-year-old averages 45 over nine holes at 2,500 yards, within the listed Boys 12–15 nine-hole Intermediate bands.
45 × 2 = 90 changes neither the distance nor the evidence into an eighteen-hole record.
Fictional records checked against published 2026 rows on October 23, 2026. No Course Rating, Slope, derived Index, actual player test or accepted entry is implied. The overlapping score bands do not decide placement alone.
The short version
- Beginner is a noncompetitive nine-hole introduction.
- Intermediate includes separate nine- and eighteen-hole conditions.
- Advanced readiness must be shown from the stated yardages.
Keep the 2026 series and age dates attached
| Series | Age-reference date | Published selection structure |
|---|---|---|
| Spring | May 3, 2026 | Event flights by age and gender. |
| Summer | July 22, 2026 | Membership division selected by age and overall ability. |
| Fall | November 1, 2026 | Event flights by age and gender; selected division also applies to the Fall Invitational. |
The two eighteen-hole cases hold age and average constant so the distance difference is visible. Neither the overlapping 80–85 score band nor a single best round determines the answer. Bring a complete comparable record to the tour office.
Keep Beginner and Intermediate conditions separate
Beginner is described as noncompetitive, with no points or prizes, on par-three and executive courses. Intermediate adds its own maximum-score and caddie conditions and has both nine- and eighteen-hole rows. Advanced has its own experience and scoring expectations.
Do not create a universal cutoff by extracting one number from another age or yardage row. Read the organizer’s Correct Division Policy and ask about uncertain placement.
Check before changing a membership
Confirm the division, season age date, permitted move-up and available events before paying. Use recent comparable scores rather than a single best round.
Use schedule planning and first-event preparation to keep the chosen level practical.
