How to Follow a Junior Golf Tournament Live: Scoring and the Rules of Watching

Whether you are on-site or hundreds of miles away, following a junior tournament live comes with a real rule most parents have never read: you cannot coach from the gallery. Here is how live scoring works and what the Rules of Golf actually say.

The short version

  • Most tours post live or near-live hole-by-hole scoring during rounds, usually through a platform like BlueGolf or Golf Genius, linked from the specific tournament's event page.
  • Live scoring updates during the round; national ranking systems like the Junior Golf Scoreboard only update after results are finalized, so do not expect same-day ranking movement.
  • Rule 10.2 of the Rules of Golf bars a player from asking for advice from anyone but their caddie, and bars anyone, including a parent, from giving advice to a player in the competition.
  • Breaking Rule 10.2 carries the General Penalty: loss of hole in match play, two strokes in stroke play, for the player who received the advice, not just a warning.

How live scoring actually works

Most junior tournaments of any size post scoring during the round, not just a final result at the end of the day. Tours typically run this through a dedicated scoring platform, common examples include BlueGolf and Golf Genius, that volunteers or tournament staff update hole-by-hole as groups make the turn or finish. The link to that live leaderboard is usually posted on the specific tournament's page on the tour's own website, not on a general homepage, so the fastest way to find it is to search the exact event name plus "live scoring" or check the tournament page directly on the day of play.

Smaller local events, especially the PGA Section and state association tours covered in our local tours guide, do not always have live scoring infrastructure. For those, checking the tour's website or calling the host pro shop after the round is often the only option.

Live scoring is not the same as your ranking updating

A common source of confusion: watching a live leaderboard during a great round does not mean a junior golfer's national ranking moves that same day. Ranking systems like the Junior Golf Scoreboard process results after a tournament is officially final, not in real time, so ranking movement typically shows up days or weeks after the event closes. We cover how each ranking system actually calculates and updates in our rankings guide.

The rule most parents do not know: you cannot coach from the gallery

Rule 10.2 of the Rules of Golf, jointly written by the USGA and The R&A, is direct on this point: a player may not ask for advice from anyone except their own caddie, and no one, a parent, a coach, another player's parent, may give advice to a player in the competition other than their own partner in a team format. "Advice" under the Rules covers club selection, how to play a shot, strategy, or anything else meant to influence a decision, not just a shouted swing tip.

This matters directly for anyone following a tournament live, whether from the ropes or from a live scoring app on a phone back home. Texting a player's caddie or relaying a leaderboard position with strategic advice attached ("you need to make birdie on 17, go for the pin") can constitute advice under the Rule if it reaches the player. The safe approach: share encouragement, not strategy, and never relay information meant to influence a shot or a decision on the course.

The penalty is not a warning. Rule 10.2 carries the General Penalty, loss of hole in match play or two strokes in stroke play, applied to the player who received the advice, regardless of whether they asked for it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find live scoring for a junior golf tournament?
Check the specific tournament's page on the tour's own website, most post a link to their live scoring platform (commonly BlueGolf or Golf Genius) once the round begins. Smaller local events may not have live scoring at all; calling the host pro shop is sometimes the only option.
Does a junior golfer's ranking update the same day as a live scoring leaderboard?
No. Live scoring updates during the round, but national ranking systems like the Junior Golf Scoreboard process results only after a tournament is officially final, so ranking movement typically appears days or weeks later.
Can parents give advice to their junior golfer during a tournament?
No. Rule 10.2 of the Rules of Golf bars a player from receiving advice from anyone except their own caddie, and bars anyone else, including a parent, from giving it. This applies to advice given in person or relayed by phone or text during the round.
What is the penalty for breaking the advice rule in golf?
Rule 10.2 carries the General Penalty: loss of hole in match play, or two strokes in stroke play. It applies to the player who received the advice, whether or not they asked for it.
