PGA Tour Champions: qualifying after national Q-School ended
The 2026 PGA Tour Champions handbook removes the annual national qualifying tournament category. It does not remove every route into an individual tournament. Standard open events still have event qualifying, sometimes preceded by pre-qualifying, while invitationals and senior majors use their own eligibility provisions.

Four fictional access decisions| Situation | What changes | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Fictional: an old Q-School plan | Alan finds an older national qualifying-school article and starts planning a 2026 application. | He replaces that obsolete route with the current handbook and the specific event's qualifying process. |
| Fictional: a first qualifying attempt | Brian has no documented exemption from pre-qualifying and wants an event-qualifier entry. | He asks the host section which stage he is eligible to enter rather than skipping directly to the later field. |
| Fictional: a qualifying result | Chris advances through a local qualifying competition and assumes he now owns a season card. | He records exactly which competition he advanced into and which event the resulting place covers. |
| Fictional: a senior major | David wants to play the U.S. Senior Open and finds an ordinary Champions event-qualifier listing. | He uses the major's own qualifying terms; the standard tour-event route does not answer that championship's entry question. |

The short version
- Start with the specific event and its current host PGA section.
- Pre-qualifying and the event qualifier are different competitions.
- One event's qualifying place is not a whole-season membership promise.
Identify the door before checking the date
The handbook gives standard open events an event qualifier with up to three tournament places. Its event-qualifier field is for professionals meeting the age-50 timing condition, and specified categories can bypass pre-qualifying. A player's first task is to establish the applicable entry category, not to assume every applicant starts at the same stage.
Prepare a short route record: event name, season, proposed stage, claimed exemption and the official item supporting it. If an old result or membership appears relevant, preserve its precise name and year. This makes a host-section inquiry answerable without asking the administrator to reconstruct the player's history from a general career summary.
Build a two-stage calendar when needed
The official 2026 schedule shows separate pre-qualifier and event-qualifier dates and names the responsible PGA section. It also demonstrates that the later qualifier is not always on Monday. For the past SAS event, the listed dates were October 9 and October 13 at Pine Hollow. That is a historical scheduling example, not a future entry invitation.
Place each stage's deadline, practice arrangements and possible advancement beside its date. A sensible travel plan distinguishes a confirmed competition from the next stage that depends on qualifying. Keep a second calendar branch for not advancing, so a speculative later start is not mistaken for an official commitment when arranging the rest of the month.
Use the actual event application
The handbook directs event-qualifier applications to the host PGA section and sets a Friday local-time deadline before the qualifier, subject to the complete governing terms. The current host form must supply the applicable entry fee and details. The separate fee portal inspected here still labels its application 2025, so it is not a reliable current price quote.
Before committing, match the application year to the event, confirm the category and retain the entry acknowledgment. Then check the official qualifying result and the next required action separately. Sponsor invitations, standard open qualifying and major-championship entry are different routes; none should be used as shorthand for the others when planning a competitive schedule.
