Handicap record explained

Posting an Unfinished Golf Round: Holes and Pickups

A hole you never started is not recorded the same way as one you began and picked up. Keep the competition result and handicap record separate.

The short version

  • Use actual scores for holes played under the applicable procedure.
  • A started but unfinished hole may use most likely score, limited by the posting maximum.
  • U.S. 10–17-hole records require the qualifying rated-nine condition and hole-by-hole entry.

Record the reason and the completed holes

For a U.S.10–17-hole round, nine of the holes played must be associated with a rated nine. Enter the played holes using the hole-by-hole feature so the system can supply the expected component for holes not played. A scattering of holes does not automatically satisfy that rated-nine condition.

Acceptability still depends on the reason for not playing and the other Rules of Handicapping. Ending merely to avoid posting a bad score is not the same as a legitimate interruption.

A pickup needs a different entry

A hole started but not completed is treated under the most-likely-score procedure where applicable, capped at the relevant maximum. Include strokes already made, likely remaining strokes and any penalties. Do not treat a concession in the match as proof of the entire handicap-posting number.

Before an initial Index is established, the applicable maximum differs from the net-double-bogey rule for an established Index. Let the authorized service or Handicap Committee resolve uncertainty.

Preserve both records

A Maximum Score competition, a match concession and a handicap posting cap are three separate mechanisms. Changing a handicap entry does not rewrite a regular stroke-play scorecard.

For a complete nine-only outing, use nine-hole differential interpretation. For a completed blow-up hole, use net double bogey.
