Scottish junior championships: choose the right entry route
Scottish Golf’s junior championships are not one interchangeable entry system. The Boys Open, Boys Amateur, under-16 opens and mixed under-14 championship answer different questions. Use the published 2026 terms as a dated comparison, then read the new season’s event conditions before applying.

Five events, different decisions

Five events, different decisions- Fictional: eligible for the Open
A visiting 17-year-old holds a men’s-rated Index of 3.8 but has no Scottish family or domicile connection.
The 2026 Boys Open’s ordinary entry requirements are the relevant starting point; do not import the Boys Amateur’s Scottish connection test.
- Fictional: different handicap ceilings
A Scottish-connected boy has an Index of 8.0 and assumes the two boys’ championships have identical thresholds.
The 2026 ordinary limits were 4.4 for the Boys Open and 12.4 for the Boys Amateur; assess each event separately.
- Fictional: age changes the shortlist
A player turns 16 during the season and wants an under-16 event.
Use the published under-16-on-January-1 condition rather than age on the competition day.
- Fictional: entry versus field
An under-14 player meets the stated age and handicap conditions.
The 2026 mixed event still had a 144-player field, initially divided into 72 boys and 72 girls, with unused places transferable.

The short version
- Separate an open championship from an event with Scottish nationality or domicile conditions.
- Check age on the date named by that event, plus its stated handicap category.
- Meeting the entry threshold does not guarantee a place after a handicap ballot.
Start with the event’s identity
The 2026 Boys Open at Cruden Bay required players to be under 18 on January 1. Its ordinary men’s-rated handicap ceiling was 4.4. The Scottish nationality definition appearing in its exemption provisions should not be mistaken for a restriction on every ordinary Open entrant.
The Boys Amateur at Fraserburgh used the same under-18 age date but an ordinary men’s-rated limit of 12.4. Its Scottish connection conditions covered Scottish birth, a Scottish-born parent or grandparent, or three years’ domicile by January 1, alongside additional representation and squad restrictions. Those details need their own reading.
Compare the format as well as the limit
The Boys Open scheduled 72 holes of stroke play, with the leading 40 and ties after 36 holes advancing to the final 36. The Boys Amateur instead used 36-hole qualifying followed by a 64-player match-play field. Both published handicap-ballot arrangements for their 144-player fields and prohibited caddies.
The Boys U16 Open used an ordinary men’s-rated ceiling of 9.4; the Girls U16 Open published a 34.4 limit within its own player-category conditions. Both scheduled 54 holes with the leading 60 and ties after 36 continuing. The mixed U14 championship scheduled 36 holes. These are materially different playing tasks.
Build an entry checklist that survives a new season
Record the event title, age reference date, applicable handicap category, field-selection rule, format and caddie condition in separate boxes. Some 2026 terms gave separately specified female-rated limits for particular player categories. Do not substitute an ordinary category’s number or use a broad label as an eligibility ruling.
Keep Scottish representation conditions separate from administrative evidence such as club membership and handicap information. Read the actual event body: two extracted PDF metadata titles did not match their girls’ or mixed-event contents. Confirm the next published terms and deadlines before treating this dated comparison as an application plan.
