How U.S. Amateur Qualifying Works

A player qualifies for the U.S. Amateur by meeting the Handicap Index limit, filing an entry, and then either holding an exemption or advancing through local qualifying and final qualifying. This is what the USGA had published for the 2027 championship, and what it had not, when we checked on October 11, 2026.

The eligibility line is the same on the USGA’s 2026 and 2027 pages: a competitor cannot have a Handicap Index exceeding 0.4. That line states the index limit and nothing else, so read the entry application for the full conditions when entries open.

A Handicap Index comes from a golf club or a golf association, not from the USGA entry. If you do not have one, the guide to getting a Handicap Index and a GHIN number covers the steps, which are the same for an adult as for a junior. Clearing the limit lets a player file an entry. It does not guarantee a place in the championship field.

Local qualifying and final qualifying are two separate 18-hole stages, not one 36-hole qualifier. Local qualifying comes first and final qualifying follows it.

The 2026 figures are last season’s. They show the scale of each stage, and they are not the 2027 dates or site counts. The fast facts pages do not say whether any player starts at final qualifying, or how many places a site offers, so check the terms the USGA publishes with the entry application.

To see what a site looked like last season, the USGA’s 2026 U.S. Amateur qualifying page lists the 2026 local qualifying sites by date, and the final qualifying sites on a second tab, with a leaderboard link for each. The 2027 sites can differ.

The USGA publishes exemptions for each championship. Do not assume a ranking, a past result or an exemption from one championship applies to another, or carries from one year to the next.

For 2026 the U.S. Amateur page counted 173 exempt players and printed the reason beside each name it listed. The reasons included the 2025 U.S. Amateur champion, recent runners-up, semifinalists and quarterfinalists, champions of other USGA championships such as the U.S. Mid-Amateur and the U.S. Junior Amateur, Walker Cup players, players who had qualified for the 2026 U.S. Open, the top 100 point leaders in the World Amateur Golf Ranking as of May 27 and again as of June 24, and 2026 winners of state amateur championships.

That is last season’s list. The 2027 page has no exempt list yet. It does state one exemption that reaches forward: the champion is exempt from qualifying for the next 10 U.S. Amateurs.

The guide to the World Amateur Golf Ranking explains how that ranking is calculated. Whether a ranking position carries an exemption is set by each championship's own published terms.

At the U.S. Amateur championship, the 312-player field plays two 18-hole stroke-play rounds. The low 64 advance to match play, and the final is 36 holes. The 2026 championship, August 10 to 16 at Merion Golf Club, is completed. The 2027 championship is scheduled for August 9 to 15 at Oak Hill Country Club.

Those rounds are the championship, not qualifying. Keeping the two apart is the difference between preparing for one 18-hole qualifying round and preparing for a week of championship golf.

For 2027 the USGA says entries open in spring 2027 and gives no date. The closing date, the fee and the qualifying sites were not on its page when we checked.

The USGA takes championship entries online. Its entry announcement for the 2026 U.S. Open gives the address of its application site as champs.usga.org. The U.S. Amateur pages we read do not name where to enter, so confirm the address on the USGA’s 2027 page when entries open. An entry is the first step, not a place in the field: a player who is not exempt still has to qualify.

For scale, the USGA accepted 5,111 entries for the 2026 U.S. Amateur, which had a field of 312. That is a 2026 figure.

Before entries open, three things are in your hands:

• A Handicap Index at or below 0.4, kept current through your club or association.
• Your amateur status. What an amateur may accept, and what playing as a professional does to that status, is covered in the Rules of Amateur Status guide.
• A date to check the USGA’s page again. It gives spring 2027 for the entry opening, June for local qualifying and mid-to-late July for final qualifying.

The two championships are entered separately and qualify separately. For 2027 the published differences are:

Clearing an entry limit means a player may file an entry. It says nothing about the odds of getting through a qualifier. Before entering, compare:

• The entry deadline for that championship, once published.
• The qualifying site, and what it takes to get there.
• Travel time and cost.
• Whether the player meets the published handicap eligibility.
• The exemption terms published for that championship.
• Your own competitive goals for the season.
