How 2026 U.S. Amateur Qualifying Works

The U.S. Amateur and U.S. Mid-Amateur use different eligibility limits and qualifying paths. This guide covers the published 2026 rules and keeps qualifying separate from the U.S. Amateur championship format.

Exemptions are championship-specific

USGA publishes championship-specific exemptions in the current entry terms. Do not assume a ranking, past result, or exemption from one championship applies to another.

How qualifying works

  1. U.S. Amateur local qualifying: 18 holes at 48 sites.
  2. U.S. Amateur final qualifying: 18 holes at 19 sites.
  3. U.S. Mid-Amateur qualifying: 18 holes at 69 sites.

Championship proper is a different stage

At the U.S. Amateur championship, the field plays two 18-hole stroke-play rounds. The low 64 advance to match play, and the final is 36 holes.

Those rounds are the championship, not qualifying. Keeping the two apart is the difference between preparing for one 18-hole qualifying round and preparing for a week of championship golf.

Eligibility is not a likelihood estimate

Clearing an entry limit means a player may file an entry. It says nothing about the odds of getting through a qualifier. Before entering, compare:

  • The current entry deadline for that championship.
  • The qualifying site, and what it takes to get there.
  • Travel time and cost for the family.
  • Whether the player meets the published handicap eligibility.
  • The exemption terms published for that championship.
  • Your own competitive goals for the season.
