High school golf in California

In California, boys golf is a spring sport and girls golf is a fall sport. Regional notes below cover exceptions.

In California, the CIF conducts girls golf in the fall and boys golf in the spring, and each CIF Section sets its own practice and contest dates within those seasons. For 2026-27 the girls state championship is November 18, 2026 at San Gabriel Country Club after regionals on November 9 and 12. The boys state championship is June 2, 2027, after regionals on May 24 and 27.

Girls on boys teams

Girls may play on boys teams. Under CIF Bylaws 300.B and 300.C, when a school provides only a boys team in a sport, girls are permitted to qualify for that student team. When a school provides both a boys team and a girls team in the same sport, girls may not qualify for the boys team. If a girls team is created later, a girl who competed on the boys or student team must compete on the girls team.

CIF state rule
CIF Bylaw 2300 says girls golf is conducted in the fall and boys golf in the spring. Bylaw 504.B requires a Section to comply with the CIF-adopted season of sport to take part in state-level competition, and Bylaw 504.E defines the basic seasons as Fall (August through November) and Spring (February through June), with exact dates varying between Sections.
CIF Southern Section
Season dates differ by Section. The Southern Section 2026-27 calendar lists girls golf (fall) with the acclimatization period beginning August 18, first contest August 24, last league contest October 23, individual regionals October 26, team divisional championships November 2 and Southern California Championships November 12. It lists boys golf (spring) with first contest February 22, last league contest April 30, team divisional championships May 17 and Southern California Championships May 27. The Southern Section calendar also shows state championship dates of November 19 and June 1, one day different from the CIF state office Playoff Calendar (November 18, 2026 and June 2, 2027); this page uses the CIF state office dates.
