Golf decisions
Southern California golf: choose San Diego, Orange County or the desert
Southern California is too broad to treat as one interchangeable golf base. Decide whether the trip centers on San Diego, Orange County or the La Quinta desert area, then choose courses within that plan. Public access, resort privileges and private membership are different questions even when the courses share a familiar destination name.

Three bases and one access check
Original teaching comparison
Three bases and one access checkFictional: San Diego visitor
An out-of-town golfer sees a resident rate for Torrey Pines.
Use the nonresident city terms. A local hotel stay does not create eligibility for a City Resident Card.
Fictional: Orange County day golfer
A visitor wants Pelican Hill without staying at the resort.
The operator publishes a fourteen-day public reservation window with limited availability; resort guests have different advance treatment.
Fictional: a La Quinta course list
A traveler assumes every PGA WEST course is a resort booking option.
Separate its five named resort courses from the private-course list before selecting an itinerary.
Fictional: combining regions
A group proposes San Diego, Newport Coast and La Quinta in consecutive short golf windows.
Map each actual journey and check tee times before committing. This comparison provides regional choices, not verified transfer durations.
Fictional route decisions based on city and operator access information. No itinerary was driven, booked or independently ranked.
The short version
- Use the actual course operator or city booking page to identify public access.
- A resort stay can change the booking window without making every course available.
- Compare regional bases before creating a multi-region itinerary.
San Diego: begin with the municipal route
The City of San Diego operates Torrey Pines, Balboa Park and Mission Bay. Its official golf page links directly to the reservation systems and explains the resident-card rules. A similar-looking commercial golf website should not be assumed to be the city operator or to have identical charges.
For nonresidents, the city’s Torrey Pines booking table lists a nonrefundable $50 per-player reservation fee for the zero-to-ninety-day window, separate from green fees. A day-of-play waitlist remains subject to cancellations and no-shows. Choose a base that works with an actual reservation rather than building the trip around a waitlist assumption.
Orange County: separate hotel and public access
Pelican Hill in Newport Coast has the Ocean North and Ocean South courses. Its public reservation terms allow bookings fourteen days ahead with limited availability; resort guests may arrange golf when booking their stay dates. Those are different planning advantages, not a guarantee that either course has the desired time.
Its range is included for warmup before a round rather than open general practice, and twilight players are not expected to complete eighteen holes. The resort also posts an enhancement program beginning November 2, 2026. Confirm the services relevant to the trip rather than carrying an older amenities assumption into the booking.
La Quinta: name the course and its access category
PGA WEST publishes five resort-course choices: Pete Dye Stadium, Mountain and Dunes, Nicklaus Tournament, and Greg Norman. The operator separately lists private Citrus, Nicklaus, Weiskopf and Palmer courses. A destination name or designer name alone does not identify which list a proposed round belongs to.
Build a shortlist within one base using the exact course, public or guest access route, maintenance notice, required booking window and complete quoted cost. Expand across regions only after the transfer works with the confirmed golf. That keeps a regional choice useful without pretending that all Southern California golf fits the same daily schedule.
