Broomstick vs Armlock Putters: Fit and Legal Contact
A long putter is not automatically illegal. The anchoring rule concerns how the club, gripping hand or forearm is held during the stroke.

Equipment
Identify the putter’s actual build and conformity.
Length and label do not settle every equipment question.
- 2
Contact
Armlock contact below the elbow differs from holding a gripping hand against the chest.
Use Rule 10.1 b’s actual contact definitions.
- 3
Stroke
An indirect anchor point can involve a forearm held against the body.
A free-swinging long-putter method is a different action.
- 4
Fit
Length, lie, loft and comfortable posture work together.
No dimensions are prescribed from a photograph or height alone.
Fictional players, numbers and arrangements. No real booking, measured equipment trial or actual event policy is represented by the example.
The short version
- Club conformity and stroke method are separate checks.
- Forearm contact has an express place in the anchoring rule.
- Putter length alone does not determine legality or fit.
Keep the rule and the fitting separate
A broomstick-style putter generally uses a different posture and hand separation from an armlock build. Those labels describe common setups, not a guarantee of a legal stroke or a suitable fit. Check the actual model and how the player uses it.
Rule 10.1 b prohibits direct body anchoring and an indirect anchor point, while expressly allowing the club or gripping hand to be held against a hand or forearm. Mere incidental touching is treated differently from holding against the body.
Look at the contact throughout the stroke
A top hand held against the chest is not the same as one hovering clear. Likewise, holding a forearm against the body to create a stable pivot can engage the indirect-anchoring provision. A legal still photograph does not prove the contact throughout the motion.
Eligible Rule 25 modifications require their own category-specific check. Do not transfer one player’s modification into a general long-putter exception.
Try the whole setup with a fitter
Record the putter build, posture, start line and distance-control observations across a consistent trial. Keep ordinary misses and comfort feedback, rather than declaring one method superior after a few successful putts.
Use the fitting preparation checklist and adaptive rules overview for the separate decisions.
