Golf decisions
Texas homeschool golf: which school can you try out for?
For Texas homeschool golf, start with the school attached to the family's residence and the district's current participation policy. If that district opts out, the closest allowing campus becomes relevant, but another district's willingness to accept an outside student and UIL eligibility review still matter. A nearby golf team is not an automatic school choice.

Four fictional family situations
Original teaching comparison
Four fictional family situations| Situation | What changes | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Fictional: the residence school allows participation | Ava's assigned school is in a district allowing homeschool participation for the current year. | Her family begins with that school and asks for its current golf tryout and eligibility process. |
| Fictional: several nearby high schools | Ben's residence district opts out; the nearest allowing district operates two high schools. | The family asks for the campus determination rather than choosing the stronger golf program within that district. |
| Fictional: an outside-district request | Cara identifies a nearby allowing district, but it will not accept outside homeschool participants. | She asks the district and UIL about the applicable route; an allowing policy does not itself compel acceptance of outsiders. |
| Fictional: a recent move | Dev's family moved during the previous twelve months and wants immediate varsity participation. | They disclose the move and prior athletic history so the school and DEC can complete the required review. |
These families and districts are fictional. School officials and the District Executive Committee determine the actual campus and eligibility; no family is ruled eligible here.
The short version
- Use the current opt-out list; it is not a list of accepting schools.
- The closest campus is an administrative determination, not a team preference.
- Permission to participate still requires school and UIL eligibility steps.
Identify the residence route first
UIL's September 24, 2026 update describes the 2026–2027 opt-out framework: districts provide homeschool participation unless their boards adopt an opt-out policy. The starting school is tied to the student's residence. If that school is subject to an opt-out, the closest allowing campus becomes the relevant alternative under the published guidance.
The official list is headed 2026–2027 even though its address still contains 2025–26. Read the heading and description before interpreting any district name: listed districts have notified UIL that they opted out. Do not treat the list as a directory of participating schools or infer final approval simply because a district's name is absent.
Separate campus proximity from permission
The closest-school question is about a campus, not a free choice among high schools in a nearby district. UIL identifies DEC oversight of that determination. A practical first inquiry asks the residence district to identify the assigned school and, where applicable, the authority responsible for confirming the closest allowing campus.
UIL also says a district allowing homeschool participation is not required to accept students from outside its district. This is a separate question from geographic proximity. Ask the receiving district about that policy before treating a tryout date as available. If its answer conflicts with an earlier assumption, seek clarification rather than selecting a farther team and assuming the same route applies.
Get the school's current eligibility packet
The guidance retains ordinary eligibility procedures, including the fifteen-day rule and PAPF review. A recent move or participation outside the residence attendance zone can require DEC review and potentially a hearing for varsity participation. Prepare an accurate residence and prior-participation timeline so the school can identify what applies.
Ask the school for its current forms, academic-evidence requirements and golf tryout process. The public guidance still contains transitional 2025 deadline language, and linked older form materials should not be treated as the final current packet. Keep district permission, campus assignment, completed eligibility review and making the golf team as distinct outcomes; none is established by merely finding a nearby program.
