How High School Golf Works

High school golf is run by each state's athletic association, for example the FHSAA in Florida or the GHSA in Georgia, so the specifics differ from state to state. What stays constant is the shape of it.

Ask the school which teams it offers, including any JV or development team. A regular season can lead to postseason qualifying and a state championship. Florida and Georgia publish separate boys and girls competitions. If you are still working to make the roster, start with how to make your high school golf team.

Season timing varies by state. Two current association calendars show why a family should check its own dates:

• In Florida, 2026 practice and tryouts begin July 27. Regular-season matches run August 17–October 24, with state championships scheduled across November 10–18.
• In Georgia, GHSA golf is a spring sport, with the state championships scheduled for May 17–18, 2027.

Do not assume your state matches a neighboring one. Check your own state association's calendar for the real dates.

A school schedule can include smaller matches and larger tournaments:

• Dual and tri matches. Your team against one or two others. Ask how many holes are scheduled and how many scores count toward the team total; those details belong to the competition rules.
• Invitationals. Larger fields with several schools at once. Check the event's format and number of holes before planning the day; the word invitational alone does not establish either.

Varsity is the school's main competitive team. If a school also offers JV or a development squad, ask which competitions that group can enter and how players can move between the groups.

Ask the coach how qualifying works, when lineups are selected and which scores or other criteria count. Making the roster and earning a place in a particular match are separate decisions; do not assume either is permanent without checking the school's policy.

The regular season feeds a postseason ladder that varies by state but generally climbs from a conference or region round, sometimes through a sectional, to the state championship. Schools are grouped into classes by size so they compete against similar programs. Two concrete versions:

• Florida. The published 2026 schedule moves from district tournaments to regionals and then state championships. Check the linked FHSAA season information for current advancement conditions and the sport manual.
• Georgia, 2026–27. In Classes 5A–7A, area champions and runners-up advance directly to state; third- and fourth-place teams go to a classification sectional. In Classes A–4A, the top three public-school teams in each area advance directly to state. The separate 2A–4A private-school areas also send their top three teams directly to the private state tournament. High school golf is one season of a competitive junior's year, not the whole thing. If the player also enters junior events, check school commitments, eligibility rules and rest before adding those dates. School competition offers a team setting; the value of any outside event depends on the player's goals and that event's actual format.

The trick is sequencing them so they do not collide. Map the year with building a junior tournament schedule, check which events fit a player's age with junior golf age divisions, and read the junior event profiles.
