Dangerous Animal Relief in Golf: Area and Procedure
The rule concerns a dangerous animal condition that could cause serious physical injury. Not every animal, distraction or uncomfortable lie qualifies.

Same animal condition; different ball area
Original fictional examples
Same animal condition; different ball areaGeneral area
A qualifying condition interferes with the reasonable stroke.
Use the Rule 16.2 procedure with the applicable complete-relief point.
Bunker
The ball lies in a bunker.
Read the bunker relief procedure, including any outside penalty option.
Penalty area
The ball is in a penalty area.
Free relief stays within that same penalty area; outside relief follows the penalty-area procedure.
Clearly unreasonable stroke
The proposed stroke is plainly impracticable for another reason.
The dangerous-condition rule has limits; it is not a free escape from every lie.

The short version
- Move away from danger and contact course staff.
- The ball’s course area changes the relief procedure.
- A penalty area has a specific within-area option and separate outside relief.
Identify a condition, not a species shortcut
Ava encounters a situation in which playing as the ball lies could cause serious physical injury. Ben is merely distracted by a nearby harmless animal. The description of the actual risk matters more than a blanket list of creatures.
Do not approach, move, feed or attempt to identify dangerous wildlife at close range. Contact course staff and keep clear. A rules example explains the next golf procedure after a qualifying condition is established; it is not wildlife-handling guidance.
Keep the course area through the relief decision
General-area and bunker situations refer into the relevant Rule 16 procedures. In a penalty area, the free option must use an eligible reference and relief area within the same penalty area. A player wanting to leave the penalty area uses the applicable penalty relief instead.
The nearest safe-looking location is not automatically the legally defined nearest point of complete relief. Avoid marking or measuring while still exposed to the condition. Obtain staff or referee help.
Check why the stroke is affected
The rule does not provide free relief when playing is clearly unreasonable for an unrelated reason or the condition matters only because of a clearly unreasonable club, stance, swing or direction. Describe the intended stroke honestly.
For water or a difficult sand lie, compare bunker relief. For the subsequent procedure, use dropping and placement.
