Does a Green Fee Include a Cart? Compare the Receipt
A headline green fee can describe only course access. Compare everything the group must pay before deciding which booking is cheaper.

Two fictional two-player receipts
Original planning worksheet
Two fictional two-player receipts| Situation | What changes | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Booking A | 2 ×$55 green fee +2 ×$20 rider fee. | Subtotal$150 before the example’s unspecified tax. |
| Booking B | 2 ×$72 cart-included fee. | Subtotal$144 on the same pre-tax comparison basis. |
| Rental set | One player needs clubs at an assumed$35. | Add it only to that player’s cost and compare the same rental need. |
| Deposit already paid | Assume$30 credited against the bill. | Separate total cost from balance due; do not add the credited deposit twice. |

The short version
- Check whether a cart is included, optional or required.
- Distinguish per-player, per-rider and per-cart charges.
- A deposit credited later is not an extra fee to count twice.
Normalize the units before adding
Booking A looks cheaper at$55, but its assumed rider charge makes the two-person subtotal$150. Booking B’s$72 includes the cart for each player, producing$144. These are invented receipts, not available rates or a recommendation of a particular course.
If a real facility quotes per cart rather than per rider, use that unit. If walking is allowed, compare a walking product separately instead of subtracting a charge the facility does not waive.
List the items the headline omits
Check rental clubs, range balls, caddie or forecaddie requirements, booking charges and applicable tax. Separate required charges from discretionary spending. Verify what a resort package includes rather than treating a bundled overnight offer as a standalone green fee.
The Pinehurst and Kananaskis FAQs illustrate how facilities publish their own inclusions, rental terms and payment conditions. Their details should not be copied into a different course’s booking.
Reconcile paid and payable amounts
Keep total trip cost, amount paid today and balance due on the day in separate boxes. A refundable deposit, credited deposit and nonrefundable booking charge have different effects.
For group entry, confirm single-player and pairing rules. For weather interruption, read which party handles a refund.
Two U.S. fee sheets separate golf from the extras
The City of San Diego's 2026 fee pages, checked October 22, provide two concrete examples. Neither example is an offer for a particular tee time.
- Torrey Pines
- The green-fee page explicitly excludes golf carts and lists a separate advance-booking charge. It also requires each player to have a set or rent one. Confirm the charge for the actual round and booking rather than assuming a cart is bundled with the green fee.
- Balboa Park
- The 2026 sheet separates green fees, advance reservations, cart rental, shared-rider charges and club rental. Its 18-hole cart row lists $40 and a $20 shared-rider figure. Those are different billing units; do not add both for the same shared seat.
Use the complete current sheet for the course, residency, day and product. A green fee, cart price and advance-booking charge can describe three separate items, while a resort package may bundle them.
