The short version

  • One partner may represent the side.
  • An arriving partner joins between holes under the format-specific condition.
  • Some breaches affect one score; some extend to the partner or side.

Track the arrival relative to the first stroke

In match play, Ben must arrive before any player in the match begins the hole to play it for the side. In stroke play, the condition refers to whether his own partner has started the hole. That difference matters when the other side tees off first.

An arriving partner not allowed to play the hole may still give permitted advice or take authorized actions for the partner. Presence, permission to play and permission to help are separate questions.

Attribute the action before choosing a score

Suppose Ava lifts Ben’s ball without properly marking a spot that must be marked. Rule 23 treats that action concerning his ball as Ben’s action. If she improves conditions affecting both balls, another analysis is needed.

For many other breaches the penalty initially attaches to the offending player, but assistance to the partner or harm to an opponent can extend its effect. Disqualification provisions have their own side-wide and hole-specific rules. Do not use the lower unpenalized number without checking eligibility to count.

Keep four-ball separate from alternate shot

Partners can generally choose the side’s order of play, subject to the stated restrictions. That does not make it foursomes, where one ball is played in alternating order.

A conceded stroke followed by play that helps a four-ball partner has a special rule. Read the partner provision before treating it as harmless practice.
