Conceded Putts: Can You Take Back a Concession?
A clearly communicated match-play concession is final. An ambiguous remark is a fact question, and a friendly stroke-play “gimme” is not the same rule.

Concession and misunderstanding cases
Original worked cases
One short putt; four conversations
“Your next stroke is good.”
Ava clearly concedes Ben’s next stroke.
Ben’s hole score includes that stroke; Ava cannot withdraw it.
“Nice putt.”
Cara compliments a ball still two feet away.
Do not assume praise clearly concedes the next stroke.
Reasonable misunderstanding
Ben lifts because he reasonably understood an action as a concession.
The rule can require replacement without penalty; establish the actual facts.
After a valid concession
Ben wants to roll the ball again.
The match score is settled; practice permission is a separate Rule 5 question.
Fictional examples for the stated conditions. Read the complete official provisions for exceptions and the procedure that applies to your actual ball.
The short version
- A valid concession cannot be declined or withdrawn.
- A conceded next stroke is included in the hole score.
- Reasonable misunderstanding and practice afterward have separate provisions.
Make the communication do the work
Ava is lying three and has a short putt. Ben clearly concedes her next stroke. Her hole score is four, not three, and she does not have to accept a challenge to prove she could hole it. A subsequent miss while practising does not withdraw the valid concession.
A concession of a stroke, a hole and the match are different communications. “That is good” needs enough context to identify what is being conceded; asking before lifting is easier than reconstructing an uncertain gesture afterward.
Handle uncertainty without inventing a concession
The Rules recognize a reasonable misunderstanding that causes the opponent to lift. In that case the ball must be replaced and the misunderstanding provision can avoid a penalty. That is different from concluding that every unclear comment was a valid concession.
Record what was said or done, whether the ball was still moving and what the player understood. A concession made while a ball is moving generally relates to the next stroke; if the ball holes, that concession has no work left to do.
Do not transfer match-play shortcuts into stroke play
Regular stroke play ordinarily requires holing out. Friends cannot create the match-play concession rule simply by calling a putt “good.” Handicap posting also has its own most-likely-score procedure; a match result and a posting entry are different records.
Practice after the hole remains subject to time, place, pace and Local Rules. A ball hanging over the cup raises the separate waiting-time rule.
