Golf decisions
Georgia home-study and virtual golfers: who files eligibility?
A Georgia home-study golfer's route to a school team involves the family, the receiving service-area school and GHSA. Qualifying virtual-school students also appear in the current rule, but online study alone does not establish that category. School participation approval and a golf postseason entry are separate processes.

Four fictional school conversations- 1
Fictional: a home-study applicant
Ava wants to represent her resident school while continuing home study.
Her family asks about qualifying-course enrollment, notice and the school's HS eligibility process before planning a tryout.
- 2
Fictional: a qualifying virtual school
Ben's program may fit the current GHSA virtual-school exception.
He asks the school to confirm the program classification; the rule excepts the home-study declaration, not every other requirement.
- 3
Fictional: online courses within public enrollment
Cara remains enrolled at a public school and takes some courses online.
She confirms her existing school-of-record route rather than assuming any online course creates a home-study transfer.
- 4
Fictional: a printed reference form
Dev downloads HS and thinks his family can mail the completed paper directly to GHSA.
The current forms page requires online filing by the school. The PDF is a reference, not the family's submission channel.
All students are fictional. The examples identify responsibilities and questions, not individual eligibility rulings or approved school assignments.
The short version
- The receiving school handles the GHSA HS filing.
- Not every virtual program qualifies for the same exception.
- Confirm notice, course enrollment and eligibility deadlines before the semester.
Start with the receiving school
The October 2026 GHSA student bylaw directs schools to use Form HS for home-study students and students in qualifying virtual schools. It says qualifying virtual students must meet the Dexter Mosley requirements except the Declaration of Intent to Home Study. The exception should not be expanded to every online provider.
Ask the resident or receiving service-area school to identify the applicable category, administrator and course-enrollment contact. Give the school an accurate enrollment and participation history. That first conversation is more useful than choosing a team from its schedule and assuming a home-study label creates immediate access.
Put notice and the qualifying course on the same calendar
GaDOE's original guidance separates parent notice, progress evidence and enrollment in a qualifying course facilitated by the resident school system. Participation includes tryouts and practice, so the family's planning cannot begin only when the first golf match appears on the calendar. Current school instructions must be checked alongside the current GHSA bylaw.
The linked HS reference packet retains different thirty-day phrases: one refers to the semester, while its online instructions also refer to participation. Ask the school to confirm all applicable deadlines before the semester begins. Do not choose the later interpretation yourself or substitute a general tournament-registration deadline for the school eligibility process.
Keep school filing and postseason entry separate
GHSA's current forms page says eligibility submissions are online; the receiving school files HS. The principal certifies eligibility and GHSA processes the required information. A family's completed document is therefore an input to the school process, not evidence that GHSA has already cleared the student.
Appendix E also retains examples explicitly labeled 2023–2024 inside its current-year page. Those old birth-date and ninth-grade examples are not current cutoffs. Use the actual current requirements supplied by the school, then treat golf team selection and any postseason entry as later, separate decisions. A participation request does not automatically place a player on either roster.
