Golf Practice Rules Before, During and After a Round

“I was only practising” can describe a permitted warm-up, a prohibited on-course stroke or a specific between-hole exception. Time, place and format decide.

Original worked cases

Follow one competition day

CASE 01

Before stroke play

Ava warms up on the practice area.

Different from taking practice shots on the competition course.

CASE 02

Before match play

Ben’s pre-round on-course practice has a different default.

Check any adopted I-1 restriction.

CASE 03

While playing a hole

Cara makes a practice swing without intending to hit a ball.

That differs from a practice stroke at a ball.

CASE 04

Between holes

Ava chips near the completed green.

Check the permitted locations, no bunker, pace and adopted I-2.

CASE 05

After the final round today

Ben considers returning to the course.

The day’s final stroke-play round matters; tomorrow’s rules still need checking.

Fictional examples for the stated conditions. Read the complete official provisions for exceptions and the procedure that applies to your actual ball.

The short version

  • The course and a practice area are different places.
  • Match-play and stroke-play pre-round permissions differ.
  • Between-hole putting and chipping remain subject to location, pace and Local Rules.

Separate the warm-up area from the course

The same chip can be legal on a practice area and prohibited elsewhere before a stroke-play round that day. Photograph or read the course’s practice-area designation if its boundary is unclear. Do not assume that an unused competition hole is a practice area.

Match play has a different default for practice before or between rounds. Model Local Rule I-1 can change the permission in either form of play, so the event notice is part of the pre-round check.

A practice swing is not a practice stroke

Cara rehearses a swing without intending to strike a ball. That is not the same as dropping a spare ball and hitting it during a hole. The Rules also distinguish courtesy returns of a ball and playing out a hole whose result is decided.

Avoid using the word “practice” as a conclusion. Describe whether a ball was struck, why, where, and at what point in the round. Those facts let the relevant provision answer the question.

Use the between-hole exception carefully

Putting or chipping on or near the completed green, a practice green or the next teeing area can fall within the stated exception. It does not permit bunker practice, unreasonable delay or ignoring an adopted I-2 restriction. Suspensions have their own conditions; a weather stoppage is not automatically an unrestricted practice session.

Keep a warm-up within the official starting-time requirement. Devices used during play still need the equipment-use check.
