Golf decisions

Long Beach golf: five municipal choices, three different round types

Long Beach’s five municipal options do not all offer the same kind of round. El Dorado, Recreation Park 18 and Skylinks are regulation eighteen-hole choices. Recreation Park 9 is an executive layout, while Heartwell offers eighteen par-three holes. Start with that distinction before comparing a headline green fee.

Choose by the shots and time you want

Original teaching comparison

Choose by the shots and time you want
  1. 1

    Fictional: a developing short game

A player wants repeated short approaches rather than a full regulation-course test.

Compare Heartwell’s par-three format with the intended practice task; do not choose by hole count alone.

  2. 2

    Fictional: a nine-hole appointment

A visitor has time for one nine-hole round and searches Recreation Park.

Select the executive nine explicitly. The eighteen-hole course across Seventh Street is a different booking.

  3. 3

    Fictional: a preflight round

A traveler notices Skylinks is across Lakewood Boulevard from Long Beach Airport.

Use that location to investigate the route, but leave time for traffic, golf and airport procedures; proximity is not a completion guarantee.

  4. 4

    Fictional: a resident-price comparison

A local golfer compares a resident green fee with a visitor’s riding total.

Normalize the card requirement, round length and cart charge before deciding which number answers the budget question.

Fictional planning cases based on city descriptions and a dated city fee schedule. No current tee-time inventory or round durations were tested.

The short version

  • Keep Recreation Park 18 and Recreation Park 9 separate in the booking.
  • Heartwell’s eighteen holes are par-three golf, rather than a regulation eighteen-hole substitute.
  • Check the current resident-card requirement and separate cart charges before comparing costs.

Read the format before the name

The city identifies El Dorado as an expansive eighteen-hole layout with mature trees and water hazards. Recreation Park 18 has its own regulation layout and facilities. Skylinks is the third regulation eighteen-hole choice, with its own location and booking contact. These are the starting candidates for a conventional full round.

Heartwell is an eighteen-hole par-three course, described by the city as fully lighted. Recreation Park 9 is a nine-hole executive layout directly across Seventh Street from Recreation Park 18. A golfer wanting a shorter format should compare these two on the shots required, rather than assuming nine holes and eighteen short holes are identical experiences.

Separate golf from the practice visit

El Dorado lists extensive practice facilities. Recreation Park 18 and Skylinks list lighted driving ranges, while Heartwell lists a range plus chipping and putting greens. Recreation Park 9 lists practice greens. Confirm the particular practice area you want rather than transferring a neighboring course’s facilities to your booking.

A useful plan names the activity first: regulation round, executive nine, par-three round or range session. Add the players’ equipment and walking needs, then identify the correct facility and entrance. The city’s published descriptions help make that shortlist; they do not confirm current lighting hours, maintenance or a free practice session.

Compare the same fee product

The operator-hosted city fee schedule read for this guide is effective July 1, 2025. It distinguishes standard, resident and other categories, and requires a city discount/reservation card for resident privileges. Its cart charges are separate. Because it is dated evidence, the figures should not be treated as a confirmed October 2026 quote.

For a current comparison, record the course, date, tee-time category, nine or eighteen holes, green fee, cart charge and any card cost. Check the cancellation and no-show conditions attached to that reservation. A lower resident number is useful only when the player qualifies and the same product is being compared.
