Golf Regripping Cost: DIY vs Shop, Item by Item
Compare the same grips for one club, seven clubs or thirteen. Separate published prices from DIY assumptions, and count supplies, tools, tax, delivery and time.
Gear & Equipment · Updated October 21, 2026
The short version
- The grip price is common to both options when the model and quantity are identical.
- Shop labor avoided is not the same as money saved: DIY supplies, tools, mistakes and delivery still cost money.
- A first DIY job and a repeat job have different costs. Keep reusable tools separate from consumables.

What actually changes
when you do it yourself?
| Clubs | Grips at assumed $7 | Shop labor |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | $7.00 | $3.99 |
| 7 | $49.00 | $27.93 |
| 13 | $91.00 | $51.87 |
Grip price is assumed at $7 each; Golf Galaxy’s published standard installation charge is $3.99 each. This is a worksheet, not a shop quote or checkout total. Thirteen excludes a separately specified putter grip.
The DIY column still needs
- Tape and compatible solvent
- Shaft-safe tools and clamping
- Delivery and tax
- Setup, cleanup and drying time
- A replacement allowance for errors
On seven grips, the labor you might avoid is $27.93. DIY extras above that amount remove the cash saving for this job.
One published labor charge, an assumed grip price
On October 21, 2026, Golf Galaxy’s service page listed standard grip installation at $3.99 each. For this worksheet, assume the same swing grip costs $7 per club in both options. That $7 is an illustrative input, not a verified current price for a named product. Assumed grip plus published reference labor totals $10.99 for one, $76.93 for seven and $142.87 for thirteen.
These combine an assumed grip price with a published service charge to make the arithmetic visible. They are not a completed store quote, confirmation that a store accepts customer-supplied grips, or a tax-inclusive checkout. Ask about supplied-grip policies, build-up charges, disposal and putter pricing.
First job versus the next job
Hypothetical seven-grip budget: grips $49.00; consumables used $10; reusable setup $35; delivery $8. First-job cash is $102.00 before tax and time. With the setup already owned, a repeat job under the same assumptions is $67.00.
The comparable grip-plus-reference-labor figure is $76.93 before tax, shop travel and any extra charges. The fictional first DIY job costs $25.07 more; the repeat job costs $9.93 less. Change the assumptions to your actual purchases. No supply price here is presented as a retailer quote.
One club, a partial set or the whole bag
For a single trial grip, paying installation can avoid buying equipment before you know the specification works. A partial set spreads reusable setup cost over fewer clubs. A full set can spread that cost further, but only if the job is successful and the build is right.
Count the clubs you actually intend to change. A thirteen-swing-grip example excludes the putter; a putter may have a different grip price, installation charge and specification. The grip specification worksheet helps keep the two quotes comparable.
Budget time and downtime separately
Ask the shop when the clubs can be collected and used. For DIY, count preparation, old-grip removal, tape, installation, cleanup and drying. Read the exact adhesive and solvent instructions; elapsed drying time is not hands-on labor.
Golf Pride’s installation FAQ gives drying guidance for its described installation method. It is not a universal rule for every adhesive, air installation or shop process. If the shaft is graphite or removal and clamping are unfamiliar, use a qualified clubmaker rather than treating this cost page as a cutting tutorial.
For a larger equipment appointment, compare the fitting service fee separately from the clubs.

- Is DIY regripping always cheaper?
- No. The first job may require tools, supplies and delivery that exceed the labor avoided. Compare the same grips and count your time.
- Does the example include a putter?
- The thirteen-grip example is for swing grips. Price the putter and its installation separately.
