Make the round work

Golf Tournament Organizer Checklist: Who Owns Each Step?

An event checklist works when every task has an owner and an observable finish. A list of things everyone assumes someone else will do is not a plan.

The short version

  • Assign course, competition and player-communication responsibilities.
  • Publish terms and starting arrangements before play.
  • Plan scoring return, ties and the weather fallback.

Name the role before the checklist item

For a small competitive event, separate the director, course contact, registration lead, starter, rules contact and scoring lead. One person may hold several roles, but the responsibility must remain explicit.

The R&A Committee Procedures organize work before, during and after competition. Use that structure to assign decisions rather than assuming a commercial booking package administers every rule and scoring task.

Make each completion visible

“Arrange scoring” is vague. “Publish the official card, certification method, return point and tie-break” can be checked. “Handle weather” needs a suspension signal, player contact plan and course authority, not an improvised text thread after the first stoppage.

Use one version of the terms and start sheet. Record who can approve changes and how players receive them. Avoid promises about conditions or capacity that the course has not confirmed.

Close the event’s obligations

Reconcile player places, results, prizes and sponsor delivery. Preserve incident and correction records under the event’s defined procedure. Do not declare results final before the stated process is complete.

Use official versus live scoring, tie-breaking and sponsorship inventory as separate working sheets.
