Golf decisions

Hilton Head golf trip: island resort or off-island base?

An island stay and a Bluffton base can both support a Hilton Head-area golf trip. The better fit depends on the rounds, accommodation and nongolf plans being compared. Start with the actual course locations and access rules, then price the same trip from each base.

Four fictional base comparisons

Fictional: several island rounds

Ava wants most golf and nongolf activities on Hilton Head Island.

She uses the island cluster as her starting comparison and confirms each selected course rather than assuming her hotel includes golf.

Fictional: an off-island golf focus

Ben wants Old South and Hilton Head National.

He compares Bluffton accommodation first, using the operators' actual locations instead of treating every Hilton Head-branded course as an island address.

Fictional: a nine-hole afternoon

Cara wants a shorter Palmetto Dunes round after another commitment.

She checks Arthur Hills or George Fazio's phone-booked afternoon nine-hole product; Robert Trent Jones does not offer the same rate.

Fictional: a waitlist result

Dev finds a Hilton Head National waitlist option and believes his round is arranged.

He records the request as a waitlist, then seeks actual acceptance before building the day's transport around that time.

Invented scenarios only. They do not establish available rooms, tee times, transfer durations, course rankings or first-person experience.

The short version

  • Palmetto Dunes' three island courses are open to the public.
  • Old South and Hilton Head National are in Bluffton, off the island.
  • Shorter-round options and guest privileges differ by course.

Separate the island from the regional label

The destination's own planning page divides island courses from Bluffton courses. Old South's operator describes public golf in Bluffton, while Hilton Head National identifies its Bluffton location and welcomes public players. These are useful off-island choices, but they are not the same base as an island resort.

Put lodging and golf addresses on the same planning sheet. If a trip mixes island rounds with Bluffton rounds, check the specific transfers for the actual departure times before assigning an arrival buffer. Neither a destination name nor a generalized mileage claim establishes how the group's chosen journey will work.

Read the selected course's product

Palmetto Dunes explicitly opens all three courses to the public. Its nine-hole terms still differ: Arthur Hills and George Fazio offer nine-hole rates after 2 p.m. by phone, while Robert Trent Jones has no nine-hole rate. Public access therefore does not mean every course offers an interchangeable shorter round.

The operator also warns that maintenance schedules can change. Keep the selected course, round type and current maintenance information with the quote. Resort-guest benefits and the detailed access rules of other resorts, including Sea Pines, require their own checks; an island address alone does not establish those privileges.

Compare like-for-like bases

For an island-versus-Bluffton comparison, keep dates, golfers, rounds and room occupancy fixed. Add transport arrangements and any nongolf activities that materially shape the day. This allows the group to compare the actual plan rather than a room-only headline against a package containing different courses.

No live quote or drive-time measurement is supplied here. Confirm rooms, course access and tee times as separate steps, then revisit the base if a required round is unavailable. A practical alternative plan preserves the trip's priorities without describing an unaccepted booking request as a reservation.
