How to Read a Launch-Monitor Report

Start with what the report measured and which shots it includes. The longest shot, an average and a selected-shot average answer different questions.

Original evidence worksheet

131.33 yards is not 140 or 145
131.33

Mean of six fictional carries:132,140,141,142,145,88.

788 divided by 6, rounded here to two decimals.

CASE 01

Filtered mean 140

Exclude 88 under an explicitly stated teaching filter.

The other five total 700;700/5=140.

CASE 02

Maximum 145

The longest of the six supplied carries.

Not the player’s average or a guaranteed course distance.

CASE 03

Labels and settings

Measured/estimated fields, ball, normalization and units.

Different reports can attach different meanings to familiar labels.

Fictional reports, orders and offers. These are teaching examples, not measured product tests, live quotes, authenticated goods or provider benchmark data.

The short version

  • Read carry versus total before comparing numbers.
  • Preserve the unfiltered shot list and exclusion reasons.
  • A single metric is not a fitting verdict.

Keep the six-shot record intact

The short 88-yard result changes the all-shot mean. Excluding it can help answer a particular normal-shot question, but it must not disappear without explanation. Record whether it was a misread, a deliberate partial shot or an ordinary miss relevant to play. These are fictional teaching numbers, not a measured golfer session.

The filtered 140 and maximum 145 are arithmetically correct and still unsuitable as substitutes for every other distance question. Decide the task before choosing the statistic.

Read definitions before targets

Carry differs from total, and software may provide actual, flat or normalized outputs. Device and software definitions determine which fields are measured, inferred or modeled. Keep settings and ball type beside the report.

Smash factor is a ball-speed-to-club-speed ratio in Trackman’s definition; it is not an all-club universal quality target. Impact, dynamic loft and other factors affect interpretation. A high number alone does not choose the right club.

Turn the report into a coach question

Describe the distribution and ordinary miss rather than reciting a tour benchmark. Ask what additional observation would explain the pattern and whether a controlled comparison is needed.

Use normalization labels and fitting preparation to keep the next session focused.
