Massachusetts Public Links: Private Playing Access and Exceptions

For the 2026 Mass Golf Amateur Public Links, membership through a public course was only part of the test. Private playing privileges and the event's specific school-team or employee exceptions also mattered.

Ordinary public membershipBen belongs through a qualifying public course and has no private playing privilege. That addresses the access branch only. He still checks Index, posting history, registration and qualification.
Public membership plus private accessCara also buys a public membership but retains broad private-club playing privileges. The public membership does not cancel the private-access restriction in the event's terms.
School-team-only accessDev's private-course access is limited to scheduled school practices and competitions.Compare that exact limitation with the published school-team exception; do not extend it to ordinary unrestricted play.
Employee accessAva's employment gives limited privileges consistent with other employees, no club-tournament participation, and an active public-course Mass Golf membership.Every stated employee condition matters. If she can play club tournaments, this example no longer meets that exception.

Original hypothetical 2026 decision cases. They assume no individual determination by Mass Golf; ambiguous facts stay questions for the organiser rather than an approval from this guide.

The short version

  • The public course must offer general-public play seven days a week under the read 2026 terms.
  • Ordinary private playing privileges can make a public member ineligible.
  • School-team and employee exceptions have their own conditions; do not broaden them by analogy.

Identify the actual privilege

The 2026 event requires membership through a public course offering general-public play seven days a week. It separately restricts private-club playing privileges. The name on a membership card therefore does not fully describe the access a player holds.

Record the actual arrangement: where play is allowed, under what conditions and whether it includes ordinary club competitions. Do not infer eligibility from buying another public membership while retaining a restricted private privilege. This is a named championship's sporting condition, not a legal classification of every public or private club.

Read each exception in full

The school-team exception is limited to access for scheduled practices and competitions. It does not automatically cover a broader private playing arrangement merely because the golfer is also on a school team.

The employee exception combines limited privileges consistent with other employees, no participation in club tournaments and an active public-course Mass Golf membership. Keep those conditions together. A job title or a single favourable fact does not establish that the entire exception applies. Ask Mass Golf to determine an unclear arrangement rather than stretching the example.

Finish the other entry checks

The read 2026 page also sets an Index maximum of 8.0 at registration and the five-round/twelve-month Mass Golf posting condition. Passing the access branch does not remove those requirements or award a qualifying or championship place.

The August 17–18,2026 event is complete. These examples explain its published conditions without asserting 2027 terms or current availability. Use the broader Massachusetts comparison and registration guide for the surrounding event and confirmation steps; keep private-access facts attached to the actual Public Links packet.
