Posting Overseas Golf Scores: Ratings and Jurisdiction
A foreign scorecard can use familiar golf terms while leaving important posting questions unanswered. Verify the round’s acceptability and exact tees before entering it.

A fictional scorecard packet from abroad
Original worked comparison
A fictional scorecard packet from abroad| Situation | What changes | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Course and country | Ava records the named course and jurisdiction. | A similar name in a search result is not enough. |
| Exact tees | The card says par 72, rating 71.6, slope 127 for her played tees. | These are invented inputs, not a rating for a real course. |
| Round conditions | Date, authorized format, company and active season. | Confirm the relevant jurisdictional requirements. |
| Posting route | The course is missing from her app’s search. | Ask the authorized service or Committee; do not assign a nearby course. |
Fictional cases and stated event assumptions. The exact official rule, eligible player category and actual Committee notice determine the real procedure.
The short version
- Keep country, course, date, format and tees together.
- Use the actual Course Rating and Slope Rating for the played setup.
- Ask your Handicap Committee about jurisdiction and posting uncertainty.
Check acceptability before the data entry
The Rules of Handicapping require an authorized form of play, the required number of holes, company, Rules of Golf compliance, a currently rated course and its active season. Playing abroad does not remove those conditions.
Keep a copy of the card and the played date. Check the jurisdiction where the round occurred and ask your home Handicap Committee how to handle any uncertainty rather than assuming every overseas social format is acceptable.
Match the rating row to the played tees
Ava’s fictional packet includes the tee name, rating and slope. Par 72 alone cannot establish a differential or a Course Handicap. Do not substitute the total length for a rating or copy another player’s rating row without checking that it applies.
An absent app listing may be a lookup problem, not evidence that the course is unrated. Confirm the official rating and the authorized manual-entry route before creating an entry.
Keep a precise question for the Committee
Supply the country, date, format, holes completed and official rating evidence. Do not repeatedly post duplicates while trying to make the app accept one.
For changed or genuinely missing ratings, use unrated or altered tees. For a shortened outing, use unfinished-round posting.
