Late to Your Golf Tee Time: Penalties and Exceptions
Your official starting time is exact. Being in the parking lot is not the same as being ready to play at the assigned starting point.

Five minutes on the official clock
Original worked cases
9:00:00 is the starting point
The fictional Committee starting time.
The player must be at the starting point, ready to play.
CASE 01
9:04:59
Ready to play at the assigned point.
Within the late-start exception: general penalty on the first hole.
CASE 02
9:05:00
Ready at the assigned point exactly five minutes late.
Still within the no-more-than-five-minutes exception: general penalty on the first hole.
CASE 03
9:05:01
Ready only after more than five minutes.
Ordinary late-start disqualification applies unless another exception applies.
CASE 04
Group held
The starter cannot send the group yet.
Present and ready when the group can start is not the same as a late arrival.
Fictional examples for the stated conditions. Read the complete official provisions for exceptions and the procedure that applies to your actual ball.
The short version
- 9:00 means 9:00:00, not the whole minute.
- No more than five minutes late has a specific exception.
- Committee delay and exceptional circumstances are different from ordinary lateness.
Use one clock and one location
Ava’s fictional start is 9:00. At 8:59 she is beside the tenth tee, but her assigned starting point is the first. Ben is at the correct point at 9:00 but still not ready to play. Both examples show why “I was at the club” is incomplete information.
Check the event’s starting point, official time and starter instructions before warming up. An organizer’s instruction to wait can explain a delayed actual stroke; it does not retrospectively excuse a player who was missing when required.
Read the five-minute exception exactly
No more than five minutes late, arriving ready to play at the starting point, receives the general penalty on the first hole rather than ordinary disqualification. The general penalty is loss of hole in match play or two strokes in stroke play.
Starting no more than five minutes early also has a specific exception. The rule is not a free five-minute window for choosing your own start. The worked clock uses times at and either side of the boundary to make that distinction visible.
Leave exceptional circumstances to the Committee
The Committee may decide that exceptional circumstances prevented an on-time start. That is a ruling on the actual facts, not something a player can self-award because a journey took longer than expected. Describe the sequence and contact the event promptly.
Plan the practice routine around the starting obligation. In a match, a later concession is a separate scoring decision and does not rewrite the starting-time rule.
