The U.S. Girls' Junior, Explained

The U.S. Girls' Junior is the United States Golf Association's national championship for junior girls. It is the direct counterpart to the U.S. Junior Amateur, run to the same championship standard and, in most years, during the same stretch of the summer. Like the boys' championship, it is an open championship: any eligible junior can attempt to qualify, rather than needing an invitation or a season of points.

Eligibility is a female amateur who has not reached her 19th birthday by the championship's final round, carrying a Handicap Index that does not exceed the USGA's published cap. For the 2026 championship, running July 13-18 at Old Chatham Golf Club in Durham, North Carolina, that means not turning 19 on or before July 18, 2026, with a Handicap Index of 5.4 or lower.

Entry is filed online through the USGA's player portal, the same system used for every USGA championship. Handicap caps are set annually and can move, so confirm the current figure on the championship's entry page at usga.org before you plan around it.

Most players reach the 156-player field through open qualifying: a single round of 18-hole stroke play at one of the qualifying sites spread across the United States, plus additional sites in Canada and Mexico. The 2026 girls' qualifying window ran from late May through July 1, ahead of the championship. The number of spots at each site depends on how many players enter, so it is worth checking a site's entry list and spot count before committing to it.

A portion of the field is filled through exemption categories published by the USGA, which typically include recent semifinalists, top-ranked players in the Women's World Amateur Golf Ranking within the age window, and champions of certain state and AGA junior championships. Exempt players still file an entry but go straight into the field without qualifying.

The format mirrors the U.S. Junior Amateur. The full field plays two rounds of 18-hole stroke play, and the low 64 scores advance to a single-elimination match play bracket. The bracket runs down to a 36-hole championship final on the last day, rather than the 18-hole matches used in the earlier rounds, which makes the final a genuine endurance test on top of a head-to-head one.

College coaches recruiting women's golf treat the U.S. Girls' Junior the way boys' coaches treat the U.S. Junior Amateur: as the single most-watched junior result of the year. A deep match play run under USGA conditions carries more weight than a strong week of stroke play, because it proves a player can win head-to-head under pressure.

The champion's exemptions extend well past junior golf. Recent champions have earned a path into the U.S. Women's Amateur and, depending on the year, into the U.S. Women's Open and the Augusta National Women's Amateur, which means winning the week can open doors into elite amateur and professional women's golf in the same season.

Hollis Stacy is the only three-time champion, winning three consecutive titles from 1969 through 1971. Nancy Lopez won twice, in 1972 and 1974, before her Hall of Fame LPGA career. More recently, Lydia Ko won the championship in 2012 and Rose Zhang won in 2021, both before turning professional and reaching world No. 1. The champions list reads as a preview of the LPGA for a reason: winning this event has long been one of the clearest early signals in women's golf.
