How to Qualify for the U.S. Junior Amateur
A player qualifies for the U.S. Junior Amateur by meeting the Handicap Index limit of 2.4 and the under-19 age limit, filing an entry with the USGA, and then either holding an exemption or advancing from one 18-hole qualifying round. The 2027 championship is July 19 to 24 at Chambers Bay in University Place, Washington. Entries open in early spring 2027, and the qualifying sites are not yet announced.

The short version
- Eligibility: a Handicap Index that does not exceed 2.4, and not having reached a 19th birthday by the date the USGA names. The 2026 and 2027 pages both give 2.4.
- Qualifying is one 18-hole round. For 2027 the USGA gives late May to early July, at sites not yet announced. In 2026 it was played at 42 sites from May 26 to July 1.
- Exempt players skip qualifying. The USGA's 2026 page counted 97 of them. The 2027 list is not published yet.
- The 2027 championship is July 19 to 24 at Chambers Bay in University Place, Washington, with a field of 264. Entries open in early spring 2027.
2027: confirmed and still to be announced
A player qualifies for the U.S. Junior Amateur by meeting the age and Handicap Index limits, filing an entry with the USGA, and then either holding an exemption or advancing from one 18-hole qualifying round. This is what the USGA had confirmed for the 2027 championship, and what it had not, when we checked on October 13, 2026.

About the age date. The USGA's 2027 page says a competitor must not have reached his 19th birthday by July 24, 2026. The 2027 championship ends on July 24, 2027, and the 2026 page used that edition's own final day, July 25, 2026. The year on the 2027 page may be carried over from last season, but the USGA had not changed it when we checked, and we have not changed it for them. A player who turns 19 between July 24, 2026 and July 24, 2027 should confirm the date with the USGA before planning around this championship.
Entries are not open yet by the USGA's own schedule: it gives early spring 2027 for the opening and no date.
Eligibility: age and Handicap Index
The USGA's eligibility line for the U.S. Junior Amateur states two limits. The first is a Handicap Index that does not exceed 2.4, which is the figure on both the 2026 and the 2027 pages. The second is age: a competitor must not have reached his 19th birthday by a date the USGA names for that year. For the 2026 championship, played July 20 to 25 at Saucon Valley Country Club, that date was July 25, 2026, the final day.
That line states those two limits and nothing else, so read the entry application for the full conditions when entries open. The USGA publishes the limits championship by championship, so check them each year.
If your player does not have a Handicap Index, the guide to getting a Handicap Index and a GHIN number covers the steps, and the guide to handicap requirements for tournaments covers how entry limits work in general.
Clearing both limits lets a player file an entry. It does not guarantee a place in the championship field.

How qualifying works
Qualifying is a single 18-hole round at one site. A player who is not exempt has to advance from that round to reach the championship, which is a separate week with its own format.
| Stage | Length, and when |
|---|---|
| Qualifying | One 18-hole round. In 2026 (completed): 42 sites, May 26 to July 1. For 2027: late May to early July, at sites not yet announced. |
| Championship stroke play | The 264-player field plays 18 holes on each of the first two days, with a second course co-hosting. In 2027: Monday, July 19 and Tuesday, July 20. |
| Match play | 64 players qualify for match play after the two stroke-play rounds, with a playoff if one is needed to reach exactly 64. In 2027 it starts Wednesday, July 21. |
| Final | 36 holes. In 2027: Saturday, July 24. |

The 2026 figures are last season's. They show the scale of qualifying, and they are not the 2027 dates or sites. To see where the sites were, the USGA's 2026 U.S. Junior Amateur qualifying page lists all 42 by date, with a leaderboard link for each. Two of them were outside the United States: one in Canada and one in Mexico. The 2027 sites can differ.
The fast facts pages do not say how many places a site offers. Look for that when the USGA publishes the 2027 sites, before choosing one.
Exemptions: who skips qualifying
The only exemption list to read today is last season's. Do not assume a ranking, a past result or an exemption carries from one year to the next.
For 2026 the U.S. Junior Amateur page counted 97 exempt players and printed the reason beside each name. The reasons included the 2025 champion, semifinalists and quarterfinalists, a 2024 semifinalist, players who had qualified for the 2026 U.S. Open, the top 40 age-eligible point leaders in the World Amateur Golf Ranking as of March 11, 2026 and the top 100 as of May 6, and winners of named junior events and of state junior amateur championships.
That is last season's list. The 2027 page has no exempt list yet. It does state one exemption that reaches forward: the champion is exempt from qualifying for future U.S. Junior Amateurs.

The guide to the World Amateur Golf Ranking explains how that ranking is calculated. The 2026 list used it on two dates. Whether the 2027 list does is not published yet.
How hard is it: the 2026 numbers
For scale, the USGA accepted 3,681 entries for the 2026 U.S. Junior Amateur, which had a field of 264. Its page counted 97 exempt players, and qualifying was played at 42 sites. Those are 2026 figures.
They show the size of the event. They are not a forecast for 2027 and not an estimate of any one player's chance. A more useful check is specific to you: open the leaderboard for a 2026 qualifying site near you and read the scores that were posted there. That tells you what the round looked like at that course last season, which is closer to your decision than a national total.

How and when to enter, and what to do before then
For 2027 the USGA says entries open in early spring 2027 and gives no date. The closing date, the fee and the qualifying sites were not on its page when we checked.
The USGA's championship schedule page links Apply to Play to its application site. That is where to go once entries open, not a sign that you can enter today. An entry is the first step, not a place in the field: a player who is not exempt still has to qualify.
Before entries open, these are in your hands:
- A Handicap Index at or below 2.4, kept current through your club or association.
- The birthday check. Compare your player's 19th birthday with the date the USGA confirms for 2027.
- Amateur status. The fast facts line does not spell out the amateur conditions, so read them in the entry application when it opens. What an amateur may accept is covered in the Rules of Amateur Status guide.
- A look at where the 2026 sites were, so you know which ones were within reach. Do not book travel around a site until the 2027 list is published.
- A date to check the USGA's page again. It gives early spring 2027 for the entry opening and late May to early July for qualifying.
What comes next
For the championship itself, read the U.S. Junior Amateur, explained guide. The girls' championship has its own limits and dates, covered in the U.S. Girls' Junior, explained. A player who is past the junior age limit can read how U.S. Amateur qualifying works.

What this page cannot tell you
- The USGA's 2027 page prints the age date as July 24, 2026, for a championship whose final is July 24, 2027. Its 2026 page printed that edition's own final day. This page quotes the 2027 line as printed and does not correct the year for the USGA. Confirm the exact date in the entry conditions when entries open.
- For 2027 the USGA's page gives the entry opening only as Early Spring 2027 and the qualifying months without sites. It gives no opening date, no closing date, no fee and no exempt list. Check it again when entries open.
- The 2026 site count, entry count and exempt-player list are last season's. None of them is confirmed for 2027.
- The fast facts pages do not say how many places each qualifying site offers.
- The USGA's 2026 page heads its exempt list Exempt Players (97). The list under that heading showed 94 names when it was counted on October 13, 2026. This page gives the USGA's figure of 97.
- The address of the USGA's application site comes from the Apply to Play link on its Championship Schedule page. We did not open the application site. The USGA gives Early Spring 2027 for the entry opening, so confirm the address on its championship page then.
- Tessaira is not part of the USGA. It cannot confirm a player's eligibility or file an entry, and nothing here estimates anyone's chance of qualifying.
