Buying a Used Scotty Cameron: Authentication Evidence
A serial number, headcover or convincing photograph is one piece of evidence. It does not independently authenticate the actual putter offered for sale.

An evidence ladder for a fictional listing
Original evidence worksheet
An evidence ladder for a fictional listing- Seller statement
- “Genuine” appears in the description.
A claim is not independent verification.
Case 1 - Photos and provenance
- The seller supplies current, complete photographs and purchase history.
Check consistency and whether the records identify this item.
Case 2 - Registry or certificate
- A record describes a particular authenticated putter.
Confirm that the offered item and its condition match; do not authenticate another object by association.
Case 3 - Physical authentication
- The maker’s eligible service examines the actual putter.
Read current service terms, fees and alteration limits.
Case 4
Fictional reports, orders and offers. These are teaching examples, not measured product tests, live quotes, authenticated goods or provider benchmark data.
The short version
- Match evidence to the actual item.
- Use the maker’s official authentication route and current eligibility.
- Agree inspection and return terms before paying.
Identify the item before interpreting details
Ask for the exact model, generation, length, alterations and clear current images of the entire putter. Stock images and a genuine-looking headcover do not establish the head’s identity. Preserve the listing and seller statements so the offered condition is clear.
The official counterfeit notice and Custom Shop information are better starting points than a universal checklist of paint colors or engraving fonts. Manufacturing and custom work can vary across models and years.
Keep different evidence strengths separate
An authorized-retailer purchase history is useful provenance. A registry entry can identify the putter described there. Neither automatically proves that a later listing contains the same unaltered item. Compare the details and use the current official authentication process where appropriate.
Do not call a putter authentic from photographs alone or promise a refund from the manufacturer if it proves counterfeit. The seller and transaction platform’s actual remedies need separate confirmation.
Make the purchase reversible on agreed terms
Confirm the inspection period, return condition, who pays return shipping and what happens if the listing’s authenticity claim fails. Do not send money merely because the price seems too attractive to lose.
For fit rather than identity, use fitting preparation. For preserving the finish afterward, use club care.
