Read a Strokes-Gained Report and Choose the Next Question

The same total strokes gained can hide different games. Identify the reference population, time window and category definitions before choosing what to investigate.

Two fictional reports both total−6 per round

Which facts apply?

CASE 01

Report A

Driving−1; approach−4; short game−0.5; putting−0.5.

A large approach loss is the first area to inspect.

CASE 02

Report B

Driving−3; approach−1; short game−1; putting−1.

The same total has a different leading loss.

CASE 03

A’s approach detail

Fairway 100–149:−1.2; rough 150–199:−2.2; other:−0.6.

These supplied teaching groups sum to−4; they are not provider benchmark values.

Fictional reports, orders and offers. These are teaching examples, not measured product tests, live quotes, authenticated goods or provider benchmark data.

The short version

  • Check benchmark, units, window and missing shots.
  • A category loss describes an outcome, not a swing diagnosis.
  • Use the distance and lie breakdown to ask a more precise question.

Establish what zero means

A strokes-gained value compares outcomes with a reference model from comparable positions. Arccos’s current explanation uses the player’s goal handicap. Another report may use a different benchmark. Changing that reference can change the displayed result without changing the recorded shots.

Check whether values are per shot, per round or totals over a selected period. Identify category definitions, penalties, missing shots and edited records before comparing two screenshots.

Read the whole original example

Report A and Report B each total−6. A’s−4 approach result leads to a different question from B’s−3 driving result. Neither total alone justifies a universal practice split.

A’s approach breakdown makes the 150–199-yard rough group worth investigating, but does not prove an iron swing defect. Entry into that position, lie difficulty, club choice and contact can all be relevant. The category losses are fictional supplied report values, not calculated from a real amateur expected-strokes database.

Write a useful handoff

A useful note says: “In this window, against this benchmark, the largest recorded loss occurs in these lies and distances; please check the missing data and observe the shots.” It does not prescribe a swing change from an app tile.

For a controlled club session, use launch-report interpretation and fitting preparation.
